With the retirements of Sami Kapanen and Glen Wesley, we're starting to get into the post-Whalers era entirely. Sad

Here's a look at which former Whalers are active in the NHL -- is there anyone else?:

J.S. Gigučre
Bobby Holik
Marek Malik
Chris Pronger
Geoff Sanderson
Brendan Shanahan

That'd be tough because Pronger and Shanny were traded for one another Wink

Yeah, Pronger-for-Shanahan was vintage Keenan -- it wasn't the type of thing which need be sought out with in-depth web searches. Laughing

Yup, I remember that trade, moreso for the fact the idiot Whalers got hosed and ended up with nothing when Shanny bolted for Detroit. A too-much-time-on-his-hands scenario would be remembering that Zarley Zalapski was one of the players involved in the trade that brought Ronnie Franchise to Pittsburgh. Cool

Shanny didn't bolt. They traded him for Primeau, Coffey and a first. They didn't get much of a return for Coffey but they did get Brind'Amour for Primeau. And the pick? The guy best known for being Chelios' cousin, and not much else

If you followed hockey in 1991, that wouldn't be a hard one to remember either, as it was one of, if not the biggest, trades of the year.

Ron Francis
Ulf Samuelsson
Grant Jennings

FOR

John Cullen
Zarley Zalapski
Jeff Parker

That's from memory... even Jeff Parker. Cool

It looks crazy-lopsided now, but I still maintain that it wasn't perceived that way at the time, as Cullen appeared to be a rising star, Zalapski more or less too, while Francis was thought to be on the decline (and Samuelsson wasn't nearly as notorious).

I don't remember anyone thinking Francis was on the decline, but I do remember Cullen being perceived as a rising star. Zalapski vs. Samuelsson I don't know so much about... but Ulf already did have a dirty rep with Hartford, he just hadn't done in Neely at that point.

Perhaps you're right, I always think he was older than he actually was. His production pace was down somewhat from the year before, but the whole league's was too.

So perhaps it was more just a case of giving to get, as Cullen was having a serious breakout year.

So, is this sheer coincidence, or does Jonathan Baum read OTP?

He even borrowed my thread title, more or less:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Ex-Hartford-Whalers-NHL-s-most-endearing-endang?urn=nhl,86719

Jonathan Baum, two days after I posted this thread wrote:

Ex-Hartford Whalers: NHL's most endearing endangered species

This was a big week in the NHL.

Sure, the Red Wings won their 11th Stanley Cup by surviving the Penguins' last-gasp rally in Pittsburgh, but the real news came out of Philly and Raleigh.
Sami Kapanen retired from the league. So did Glen Wesley.

OK, so these might not be on the level of, say, a Dominik Hasek calling it quits (again), but they still are plenty notable. Not because the 34-year-old Kapanen, a pretty good winger and two-time all-star over his 12-year career, has decided to go back to his native Finland and perhaps play a couple more years. And not because Wesley, the 20-year vet who ranks sixth in NHL history among defensemen in games-played, is moving to a front office job.

No, the reason Kapanen's and Wesley's retirements truly are significant is because it means two fewer former Hartford Whalers are still lacing up the skates in the NHL. And there are some rather famous names on that dwindling list.

Yeah, I wondered about that when I saw it as well. Confused
