Saw bits and pieces here and there of the game while wrapping presents. I watched the replay of the shootout, and I don't know if Detroit figured something out, but all three shooters for Detroit, Datsyuk Zetterberg and Hudler, all abused Kolzig with a backhand deke on the glove side.

And I thought Kolzig was smarter than that. Ya think he would have figured that out after the first two....

The story of the game (IMO) was Washington holding their own in the shots department vs. Detroit, and Detroit allowing 30 shots on goal for probably the first time in a year and a half or something.

It was hardly the Red Wings best performance of the year. They came out flat in the 1st period. I think they thought it would be a cake walk and the Capitals promptly informed them otherwise. I understand from an interview with Cleary that Babcock blistered the paint off the wall during the 1st intermission and the 2nd and 3rd periods were much more competetive. I liked the fact that the ref's generally put away their whistles and let the two teams play. That game had a nice flow with up and down action. It was more like a late 80's game of hockey then the modern whistle happy game you usually see. It looked good on both teams. Holmstrom's return was the key last night with 2 goals. Draper is slated to return soon.

On another note, the Red Wings now have 51 points in 33 games and are on pace to reach the 1/2 way mark of the NHL season with roughly 63 points.
