Juno
Did you ever say to yourself, "I'd really like to see Jyrki21's high school?" Well now you can, in Juno!
If you can get past the very forced attempts to make this a cult hit among hipsters in the opening 1/3 of the movie (very unlikely dialogue, exaggerated attempts to make the title character seem avant garde, etc.), it's actually a nice story, and one whose latter stages are somewhat surprising in light of the aforementioned hipster origins of the script (just when you think it might go all American Beauty on you, it doesn't -- and by this comment I'm referring to AB's tired '60s undertones of the free-spirited good guys versus the organization-liking bad guys, not specific plot elements. Though there are a couple of those echoing as well).
It's kind of Knocked Up as an indie film, but with a number of name actors. And if you've ever wanted to see what Jennifer Garner looks like when she's actually acting, you finally have your chance. Jason Bateman is quite good with his usual deadpan self, as well, and J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney are both very good in their parts, if a little unrealistically comfortable with the teenage pregnancy.
The movie is set in Minnesota (a Wild jersey even makes an appearance), but I don't think I could put together a better depiction of Vancouver (or I should say the Caucasian elements of Vancouver) than this film, to be honest...! Both the lead character (Ellen Page) and the father of her baby (Michael Cera) are Canadians, albeit from out east, and reminded me strikingly of a number of my high school-era friends in the way they dressed, talked, played guitar, interacted and had a certain nonchalance about everything. And of course repeated scenes of what were very clearly west side Vancouver streets helps out too.
And as mentioned, there's my high school -- including the very cafeteria I briefly worked in, and the track I used to run on. (My school used to be used a lot for the filming of 21 Jumpstreet in the '80s, and I believe a number of other shows/films have been shot there, but none that I can think of recently).
It was slow to win me over, but in the end it was enjoyable and an easy recommendation.

Ian, did you actually hate American Beauty before you read The Rebel Sell? _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

I've never hated it -- I still like American Beauty (I own it on DVD), I think it is a well-made film and very entertaining. I also think the Rebel Sell authors have it pinned down perfectly, however, in terms of the lameness of its message. _________________

CLOVERFIELD
Although the best part of the movie was the teaser trailer for the new Star Trek movie during the previews, I had a lot of fun with this glorified monster movie.
Manhattan gets completely destroyed, which is cool. It's basically a cross between Godzilla and the Blair Witch Project, so it is essentially a gimmick. At 80 minutes, the constant shaky hand held camera made me feel pretty dizzy.

The Bucket List

It's a tear-jerker movie that answers the question "What would you do if you knew you were going to die soon?" Freeman gives a great performance while Jack looked to be a caricature of his former self, It works well in a straight man/funny man sort of way.
The plot device is contrived. Freeman just happening to be in the same room as the owner of the hospital (boy that sounds weird to these Canadian ears) is unbelievable, but how else were they going to complete the bucket list.
The character development is pretty good, but I would have preferred a bit more development on Jack's character to go with the Bonnie and Clyde hilarity. As it stood, the ending did bring a tear to my eye.
A good movie to take your girl to. _________________ The fans represent the soul of the organization. This is their team. Us, we simply try to make it better. We sat in the front caz it was packed and I had to leave the movie caz I was getting nauseous , dizzy and ill. I never thought that would've happened to me , I never get dizzy/sick on rides or video games or anything like that but my head was spinning and my stomach was starting to get weezy. It felt like I smoked up or dropped some acid , its that after effect.. my worst movie exp ever. Had nothing to do with the content of Cloverfield , it looks cool , I still wanna see it (rent it or download it) but be warned , do not sit close and it will get you dizzy. They actually had warning signs as you walk in " Cloverfield can cause dizzyness, seizures , headaches ..." ironically I mocked the sign as I walked in.... I wasnt the only one who left , many people couldnt handle it either.
We left , got free movie passes and snuck back into No Country for Old men(super awesome movie) , so the night was salvaged.
*edit.. I cant recommend this movie(Cloverfield). The opposite would be a beautiful looking movie with a horrible story and bad acting , it still gets a bad review..this movie looks like it had good stuff in it but the presentation was a horrible experience for myself , though I wish I could've enjoyed it ... Im throwing two logs of feces at the screen ( 4 being the worst) |

Sat right in the back row for Cloverfield today and both the Wife and I where okay with the shaky cam, she had to stop looking once for a minute but she gets queasy real easy.
Oh and I thought the movie was fantastic, loved how untidy everything is in it as I don't feel I need everything spelled out and then wrapped up for me in a movie. One of those movies where when it ends people remain seated in silence for half a minute puzzling over what they just saw.

At the suggestion of a fellow Flames fan:
NO END IN SIGHT
If you thought Rummy and the administration were idiots this documentary certainly seals the deal. Does not offer any opinion one way or another but lets the morons speak for themselves.
Iraq is certainly no German reconstruction project. They started planning 50 days before the invasion.
Made me think that we have screwed up reconstruction so severely leaving Iraq would be a better alternative for the people.....but then you watch more of the film and the mess we are responsible for is just as bad. With a region in turmoil surrounded by unfriendly regimes there is no way we can just leave..........hence the title of this movie.
Good suggestion and certainly required viewing for American Netflix owners.

Yeah, the Nebrasquosie and I saw it as well, she had the same complaints and even I suffered some disorientation, but I agree wholeheartedly with this review...I loved it and after dragging her to it, even she had to admit it was enjoyable. And I loved the monster, a kick-ass installment to a tired old genre. |

RAMBO: 00000000000 pucks!!!!
This movie fuckin blew compared to First Blood. It had a ton of sick gory violence but the story was dumb and had no build up or whatever I can't really think of how to describe movies. The acting was terrible, the dialouge was shitty, and actually the final fightign scene wasn't that good. It seems like they rushed the story and the movie.I forget how long it is but it didn't seem like it was barely an hour long.
No substance.
The best part was the preview for a movie called "The Son of Rambo(w)" _________________

THERE WILL BE BLOOD
A weird Kubrick-ian twist at the end (the last 20 minutes feel like a different movie) but Daniel Day-Lewis is fucking amazing as always. Really captures the desolation and weirdness of early 20th Century California. Jonny Greenwood's soundtrack is good but abrasive in parts. A must-see.

THanks for the review gents - almost saw Cloverfield today, but heard that it was all 'shakey camara' like Blair Witch, so we were like, fuck that. I never even bothered to watch Blair Witch for that simple reason .....
Watching a movie shouldn't be a pain in the ass.

I agree. But I sort of liked cloverfield and then I hated it all the same. I did get dizzy. I hated how nothing was really explained or anything. I hated the way to long and boring beginning party scene. That scene should have been about a third the length that it was.
It was different and I think it could have been a really good movie if it had been done differently. _________________

Eastern Promises
This wasn't too bad; I think Av might have reviewed it in the old OTP, but I think it bears repeating. This is a movie about the Russian mob in London, and surpringly lacked the wacky, weird shit that David Cronenberg is known for (which was fine by me). The ending was a bit telegraphed, but it was ok nonetheless. Stars Naomi Watts (sorry, no full frontal) and Viggo Mortensen (yes, ladies, he does have a full frontal nude scene here... My wife was impressed...)

CLoverfield Spoiler : For Cloverfield Dudes who've seen it....
I watched it , Downloaded it ,...much easier on my eyes and head. But did any of you guys stay and watch the end credits. I agree with leaving some things as a mystery which is why I did not like the closing scene during the end credits.. the monster is explained in the closing shots ...somewhat. Did any of you see it and did you like it? |

Not big enough, so while it narrows down what the origins likely are still leaves lots of room for another movie to make a killing at the box office explaining what really happened. _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

CLOVERFIELD SPOILER DISCUSSION
at the end credits ,they show one last clip from the video tape of the main dude and his girlfriend . The camera is shooting them as they pose with the ocean behind them... and off in the distance you can see a meteor/aka space egg crash into the water *fade to black*.. as the final credits end , the last audio clip you hear is his faint desperate voice on a raggedy recording " ...its still alive". |
