Man, what a turn around. Sure, the Southleast is back to being a joke again, and the Hurricanes imploded, but still. Waddell's coaching is looking a lot better than his managing, although picking Recchi off of waivers was a stroke of genius for this team. The former Hab continues to defy his critics and is producing at a point per game pace since joining Hotlanta.

To look at the SE is to look at the definition of a crapshoot. Tampa Bay, in dead last in the Eastern Conference, is only 9 points behind Atlanta and Carolina, who are both tied with 48 points. At the current pace of the SE, the division champ will have less than 90 points. The Habs finished last year with 90 points and in 10th place, for a reference.

You almost wish the Habs slip to the 6th seed from their current 5th seed spot just to get the more favourable matchup (rather than face current #4 seed Pittsburgh).

To make things worse, only 2 of the teams in the division is winning with any regularity as of late, being Washington and Atlanta. Atlanta is 5-4-1 in their last 10, hardly world beaters (that's a .500 win %, though it's a .550 points %), while Washington is 6-2-2 over the same time frame. Tampa, Florida, and Carolina are losing more than winning right now. With a couple games in hand on everyone in the division, Washington stands a good chance of catching Atlanta for the top spot in the division at their current pace.

To the Habs now. Montreal is earning a lot of points right now, building a small coushin between their current standing (5th) and the teams on the outside of the playoffs. It's a 6 point gap from 9th place Boston (shows just how important that head to head matchup has been), but it spreads to a 10+ point gap when looking at 11th to 15th, which is important.

Montreal is currently in a grouping with the top Atlantic Division squads for a playoff spot, 1 point behind Pittsburgh and New Jersey (who hop between 2nd and 4th seed), 1 point ahead of 6th place Philly and 3 and 5 points ahead of 7th and 8th place Islanders and Rangers.

Plain and simple, these are points both teams need. While some teams near the bottom of the EC standings can go on big runs, the fact remains the playoff picture is starting to come into better focus as most of the teams from 11th to 15th have now been downgraded to "unlikely" playoff contenders. Safe to say, unless you're in the SE, 90 points is the bare minimum.

Neither Montreal or Atlanta are locks for the post-season, but they should both be in contention for a spot for the remainder of the year. Both teams are pretty much healthy, too, which helps a lot.

Habs have a quick start, but no goals yet.

Puck bounces in off Huet, 1-0 Trashers.

Somebody botched that call on Frankie big time. This looks like it's going to be another barn burner in the Sun Belt.

And since it's hard to tell sarcasm on a message board, this game is going to suck donkey balls. I should have found a better way to waste my evening. I swear I don't remember a single moment of that period beyond the goal.

Note to Habs' shooters... don't go glove side on Lehtonen unless you're deking.

Wow. Nice pass by Latendresse and Ryder chips it upstairs. Didn't expect the slow-poke line to get one tonight.

The Habs would be great if it weren't for the crappy goal tending this year...

Price for Raycroft. Price won't win the Calder.

Listening to a shootout sucks.

Habs take it an shootout, believe it or not.

2 points is 2 points, even if we blew a lead, that extra point to Hotlanta won't affect us in the slightest.

The last two wins have been messy wins, but at least this team is showing some mash.

Huet's never been a good puckhandler, but man... he's like a freaking 4 year old out there right now with it.

Uh, shootout win. Whatever.

All 3 games vs Atlanta this year have been 3-2 shootout decisions. This was the first Montreal win of the bunch.

Stinky, are you being sarcastic? I'll take a .923 SV% any day of the week.

I wonder if he's trying to copy Price or increase his market value. If he is? Stop it - that's like razz being objective. Stick to what you're good at.
