Sharp doesn't have one, but what is it called when someone with a wood thread gets an extension?

Yikes. The 36 points he has this year is already his career high, and he gets 3.9M a season?

There's nothing to suggest he would be a major target for an offer sheet (he was to be an RFA at season's end) and only has a hot first half to show for an entire career.

I don't understand what prompted this signing.

Damn - at least wait for Kevin Lowe to make a ridiculous offer before you match it!

That's what disturbs about this move, it doesn't even strike me as a panic move or a post-coital euphoric move.

1. Sharp isn't some major cog that needed to be addressed ASAP

2. He's having a good first-half, c'est tout

3. the team is doing ok, but they're still a marginal playoff contender

4. Sharp isn't one of their big prospects

So why does Tallon or whoever's in charge decide that now is a good time to sit down with your no. 2 centre and give him a 400% raise? I don't get it, when the hell did Sharp become priority no. 1? Darcy Regier wouldn't have dealt with this one until mid-September.

Yeah, they still have to re-up Seabrook this off-season.... and they just blew $2.5m a year on Sopel for the next 3.

Would it be redundant to say "Welcome to the NewNHL"?

All I can think of is that Sharp's agent may have approached the team first, they realized they saw eye to eye, and figured that they may as well get it done with ASAP to worry about the others later. Perhaps a premium was paid (subconsciously or otherwise) for the sake of getting it out of the way fast.

But yes, it certainly seems steep.

Seriously, I can see this happening in a league like the NFL where contracts can be torn up almost as soon as they're signed, and in the NBA where there's a soft cap, but in a league that has not only guaranteed contracts, a hard cap, AND explicit rules barring the renegotiation of deals and the trading of salary portions, so many marginal grinder types are getting big bucks.

Sharp is a decent player but nothing above a 3rd liner at best. What gives!?
