Here is a Youtube of the hit.

With the benefit of digital cable, I actually happened across the televised version of the Pratt and Taylor show on Sportsnet Pacific, and they were expressing some outrage at the brevity of this suspension. Pratt thought it was identical to the Downie hit and that it's an exhibit of a clear double-standard.

You know what? It is a double-standard, and I don't really mind it. Guys like Kovalchuk sell tickets... really you won't find any business where the rainmakers are treated the same as the rank and file. Provided he's not a repeat offender, I think the game suffers a fair bit by having Kovalchuk sit out than it does when Downie is out.

It was definitely a bad hit. One game wasn't enough, but I don't think it should have been 20, either.

Hey look, the NHL isn't dealing with a blatant hit from behind. Nothing to see here...move along...

Based on the NHL's standard, this actually was a harsh penalty. Rolling Eyes

Laughing I wonder if the idea of a two-period suspension came up in the board room.

Naw, because Pronger would surely have gotten one of those in the playoffs last year.

To be fair, Kovalchuk did get 5 and a game from the refs, so in essence this is a 1 2/3 game penalty (happened in the first).

Not so fast - since punching Blake in the eye Downie has 8 points in 9 games ! Wink

For punishment he should be forced to play in the All-Star Game.

But what is the scale of value to the team?

X Kovalchuk games is the same value as Y Downie games.

I don't think that the hit was worth twenty games, but it was certainly worth more than one based on what we've seen so far. Kovalchuk got off easy.

Sorry, but I can't agree with the double standard. I don't care who it is, if selling more tickets or ad minutes equals a greater risk of bodily injury because some prima donna shmuck knows that he's not going to get penalized harshly for it then I want no part of it.

There should be a dual system that punishes the players and also punishes the team the player is on.

Fair enough, I guess what I mean is that I understand why the NHL does it. It's definitely not just (but little is in business), but if I were running the league, I'd be hard-pressed to force one of its largest attractions out of the lineup.

The league was in a tough spot on this one, I'll give them that. Kovalchuk is the hometown All-Star boy this weekend.

All that being said, the NHL really isn't doing anything but token penalizing for hits from behind so this really isn't lenient in that respect. So I don't think it's as simple as "star" treatment though because of the unique situation here I'm sure that did come up.

Yeah, I'd agree with that 100%. I too can understand it, I don't have to like it, but yeah.

A perfect example of this is Mark Messier's spearing suspension near the end of his final season.

Yeah it's definitely not just. If you're a guy who wasn't born with the skill of a Jagr or Kovalchuk, why should they get any less punishment if they injure you with a dirty hit than you would get if it was the other way around, simply because they've got more skill? A problem for both the NHL and the PA...
It might come into play here, or it could just be another instance of the NHL yet again not dealing with hitting from behind.
