That's what happens when you just apply a single ratio and call it a "power ranking".

Yes, the West is better than the East. For God's sake, look at Toronto... they're only 5 points out of a playoff spot and they're 20-30! But plop Phoenix in the East and they'll have a completely different record, they won't have one based on that ratio at all.

And anything that eliminates shootouts just isn't based in reality anymore.

Exactly. By using that 'difficulty of schedule' variable, how can you not get a result that keeps the west higher? This is shoddier modelling than the hockey stick shaped predicted temperature graphs that were thoroughly discredited.

And I agree on the shootout treatment as well. Unless the objective is to model something for the playoffs, you have to consider shootouts.
