Ottawa below Phoenix, Columbus and Vancouver? I think face validity just went out the window.
Okay, so perhaps it's not definitive evidence... _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

That's what happens when you just apply a single ratio and call it a "power ranking".
Yes, the West is better than the East. For God's sake, look at Toronto... they're only 5 points out of a playoff spot and they're 20-30! But plop Phoenix in the East and they'll have a completely different record, they won't have one based on that ratio at all.
And anything that eliminates shootouts just isn't based in reality anymore. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

No wonder that hockeyanalysis.com article is bunk, it was done by the first-ever analyst-therapist.

Exactly. By using that 'difficulty of schedule' variable, how can you not get a result that keeps the west higher? This is shoddier modelling than the hockey stick shaped predicted temperature graphs that were thoroughly discredited.
And I agree on the shootout treatment as well. Unless the objective is to model something for the playoffs, you have to consider shootouts. |
