They need him, IMO.

Cup contenders now. Kinda lame that Nieds and Selanne jerked us around for so long. Burke should make it a trifecta and sign Foppa.

It's not as bad as it would be if these were players who weren't in their system before, but it still seems to really cheapen the hockey season to have it done this way. Just seems so... contrived.

It's like working your ass off all season as a minor hockey goalie, only to be told on the eve of the playoffs that the coach's son, who just got back from boarding school, is going to be the starter.

Much as I hate the Ducks, there really isn't anything shady or dirty going on here. No rules have been broken, and if Selanne wants to stay loyal to the Ducks organization and play for less money, that's his choice.

Confirmed:

I wonder if we'll start seeing this more and more with veteran players... they still make plenty of coin, get even more time with their family, and the team doesn't mind for cap reasons.

Set the season deadline for Nov 1st and cut out this friggin nonsense:

Quote:
But as a player older than 35, Selanne is entitled to performance bonuses and he will almost certainly earn another $1.35 million from the Ducks this season. That performance bonus is achieved by simply playing 10 games,

Shanahan has the same thing with having to play 10 games.

I don't know if "teams don't mind". Anaheim had to deal Andy Macdonald and struggle for the first half of the year without both Teemu and Niedermeyer. It definitely looks like it cost them a shot at 1st overall and home ice throughout the playoffs... luckily, they still have a shot at the division since no one in their division has really capitalized on the opportunity.

This Clemens-esque practice has to end. All it does is further cheapen the point of the season while setting a bad example that could be mimicked by other stars.

I can agree to that. I just don't see how it benefits the Ducks to be without their Conn Smythe winner for 2+ months and their leading scorer for 2/3 of the season.

Honestly, the fact of the matter is the NHL is better off for having Niedermeyer and Selanne back. And it's better off for having a team as strong on paper (and in reality, it seems) as the Ducks are. There are too many mediocre clubs. It's just stupid that we had to wait this long to see this team actually assembled.

I'll buy that. But it doesn't mean I have to like it.

Sam I think you and I discussed "Clemensing" in the context of Niedermayer and I said that there were differences with Clemens and Scotty(the major being impact on his own team because he was still under contract while Clemens wasn't), but Selanne is definitely a more appropriate comparison. Although I've liked Selanne far more than I've ever liked Clemens...

Completely agree. Unfortunately what they've reassembled and my favorite team may very well have to face them in the playoffs again Mad Although this time around, hopefully we're a lot healthier Mad

It does provide a back door for teams on the brink to have a stronger, healthier roster come playoff time, though... to me it does cheapen the regular season. Sure, you already have to be good enough to pull it off without suffering too much in the standings, but the difference between Cup winner and Cup finalist is pretty well-known, and if it can bridge that gap...

Yeah Jeff - we did. There is the difference that S.N. was under contract, but I think he was also suspended so that his contract didn't count against the cap until he decided to return - which in effect, makes him financially similar to Clemens. In either event, the similarity is that both players decided based on their own agenda rather than the needs of the game.

That leads me to sask's, and maybe tcl's, point - no. The league is not "better" because they are in it... of course, that is dependent on what you mean by "better". What I mean is that the strength of the NHL used to exist through how the players believed in League/sport, and consequently, the Cup. I don't see how Scott and Teemu fit into that construct, other than that they believe in the importance of winning the Cup. An "ends justifies the means" mentality.

This is seriously lame. F you Teemu and Neidermayer and to hell with the Ducks.....

I certainly agree with all the statements of mockery on the regular season and the team concept. This is a joke.

Damien Cox's viewpoint.

Quote:
Tardiness is the talk of the NHL today, but on two different fronts.

There's the late arrival, for starters, of Anaheim winger Teemu Selanne, who announced he was coming back to the Ducks on Monday. To be sure, Reijo Ruotsolainen used to show up a lot later in the NHL season than this, but many are suggesting Selanne's prolonged semi-retirement illustrates the need for the league to legislate on the matter by issuing a deadline by which players must commit to playing in the league.

Why? For starters, Selanne has earned the right to call his own shots, and if a team wants to go along, good for them. But its not like there's anything underhanded going on here, so rules for the sake of rules don't really make much of a difference.

And wouldn't you say the NHL is better with Selanne than without him? Of course, given the decisions of Selanne and Scott Niedermayer, the next prominent NHLer to announce his retirement is going to be created with a chorus of "Yeah, right."

http://thestar.blogs.com/thespin/

Yeah I'm against it. But it seems like it's a discussion of reference point - the player, the team, or the game. I'd include the league, but I don't see a "league viewpoint" under Bettman - more a Bettman viewpoint.

Mathieu stays home, while Teemu shows up at camp for a "pro tryout agreement"... For Schneider's sake, I hope this gets resolved by Monday.

If Schneider wanted to exact some revenge, he could always, you know, retire.
