So yesterday I'm vacuuming my computer area, which is littered with power bars, extension cords, usb/coaxial/broadband cables and is generally an unsafe area.

After finishing cleaning up, I plug the computer back in and turn it on, when it suddenly shuts off again. Confused, I push the on button again, while leaning forward to get a glimpse inside (my computer case is transparent). As soon as I get close, sparks come flying out the back and thick black smoke jets from the power supply vent. Fearing my eyebrows were singed off, I instinctively fling myself backwards, and am sent sprawling.

Luckily it was just the power supply frying, and I was able to get it to the repair store in time (the same store that custom built my PC). I just got it back now, and it's purring like a kitten, and the hard drive (and my 40GB music collection) is saved. Believe it or not I had a 3-year full parts and service warranty, so I'm taking this bad boy in for a new video card next week.

The lesson? Don't have 25 things plugged into four outlets within a few feet of each other.

I had to post caz I remembered reading this last week and I was going to recommend the PSU I bought and then you guessed it , perfect timing.. this past weekend my PSU fried up. My pc wouldnt boot , got the blue screen of death , a couple more boot attempts then complete shutdown and I smelled burning electronics and unplugged it. Ironic caz my old Dell flopped on me caz of a crappy PSU , so when I built this one I made sure to invest into a quality PSU!

ANyhoo , Im going to pick up this Antec 500W 80Plus PSU on sale for $60 on the way home. My old one was an Enermax 535W All-in-One models , it got great reviews but mine only lasted under 2 years.

I finally installed my new PSU , I start it up , still shorts out... so I hold onto the power button , my video card actually caught on fire. Small little one(size of a lighter/matches) and it went out soon as I powered off. I have never seen that shit before , I've heard about PC's catching on fire... crazy. So now Im in the market for new Videocards,, even though only one shorted out( I was SLIing , using two cards) and its still more than good enough for TF2 , I got an excuse to splurge a little. Plus the 8800GT's are $170 for a 320mb version.. cheaper than my current cards.

Turns out my PSU was ok , so I recommend Enermax again! lol
