26.8% PP efficiency, only 0.2% behind #1 ranked NYI.

Just thought I'd let everyone know.

Unfortunately, our PK suffers without one Radek Bonk, though. 79%, and 21st in the league.

We're a +2 even strength, though.

I still appreciated his contribution to the team. I think he brought intangibles and gave more space to the forwards because he was such a major weapon in the offensive zone.

Could you imagine a d of:

Markov-Komisarek
Hamrlik-A rejuvenated Rivet
Souray-Streit

That would be cool.

And it probably still wouldn't cost as much as the Leafs blue line Razz

I'm not trying to be-rate Sheldon, just saying we can ice a pretty effective PP with this year's personnel as well.

The improvement that Hamrlik has brought to the 5 on 5 play is monumental, though. Like I've said, he makes Breezer look fine for the most part. But Breezer still finds a way (as we'll note consistently in his thread).

We do lack a shutdown centre IMO and we won't find one this year. Obviously that's Chip's role in the future but Smolinski was to replace Johnson more so than Bonk... a forward that provides a little of everything bot not a lot of anything. Bonk's duties are for now being spread by committee, and unfortunately the PK takes a hit because of that.

OUr D is pretty cost effective. I didn't have much of a worry with the Hamrlik for Souray replace. The Hammer has been more consistent that Souray and was always much better defensively. The only real concern, of course, is his health, but then again, Souray was never a monument to good health.

Bonk.... ahhh.... there's the rub. I'm still not sure why we couldn't re-sign him I saw a few more Habs games near the end of last season, and I was utterly amazed at how well he transformed himself to a defensive player. He covered his player well, and didn't look out of position often.

Bonk may be a good PK and defensive center(he was in Ottawa too), but if you're a playoff team at the deadline you might as well deal his ass away. I don't know how he managed to get 10 and 11 points in consecutive playoffs, but holy crap did he ever blow serious dead bears in the playoffs for Ottawa whenever I saw him play.

My guess on Bonk is two-fold:

1) he wanted a multi-year deal for a couple million (he got 2 years, $3m total from Nashville). We wanted 1 year (like Smoke got).
2) We had Chipchura ready for NHL duty, and we were grooming him. We also have Lapierre, who did some work in the checking capacity last year. I think it's more a case of letting these players take on some of the responsibilities than an underestimation of Bonk.

Our PK unit will have to improve, though. I think we can handle the 5 on 5 role Bonk filled easier, as it's easier to get postiive matchups and split up duties amongst a collective that way.

Didn't he become a defensive player in Ottawa? I don't remember him having good D skills early in his career. As far as playoff go, it would have been nice to see how he performed with Montreal Sad

7 games, 2 goals, -1.

I remember that he was producing pretty good numbers in Ottawa, while being a good, defensive center. Poor man's(literally, he was around when Ottawa missed a couple of paycheques, wasn't he? Laughing) Bobby Holik. But I also seem to recall that he absolutely disappeared come playoff time. 1 assist in 24 games in 5 playoff years, and wasn't even close to the big defensive center that he was in the regular season. Complete opposite of Holik in that sense.
He improved his numbers a couple of playoffs when Ottawa made it out of the first round, but I don't know how his defensive game was then.

See - that's the part I don't remember (the early defensive bit). I recall Bonk coming in as a strong offensive center, which is why the Ottawa fans were pissed when he didn't perform in the playoffs. If he did have a defensive style, then it makes it a little less impressive to see him play so well defensively now. However, I do wish he stayed with the Habs since my take on him is as a latter day Carbo - strong defensively with some offensive upside- the difference being intensity (that goes to Carbo) and size (that goes to Bonk). And that's another reason why I can't understand why he didn't stay - he generally fits Carbo's style. It had to be the money,....

And yo man - if I had a few million to get through the tough times (what - 1 1/2 years?) - I'll never call myself a "poor man". Then again - I am a student again. Heck - a monk gets more money! Laughing

The "poor man" I was referring to was the Ottawa Senators Wink

Missed this last night.

That's what I thought during the off-season, but if they didn't keep Bonk, then why send Lapierre down? One possibility is that they want to generate more 5-5 offense and hope that they can build general team defense instead of having defensive specialists, which will take time..... wait... you just said that, didn't ya, Laughing

Well if it makes you feel any better it looks like the wheels have fallen off in Nashville for Bonk and the rest of the Preds after a decent start...it may take something drastic to turn things around, like a game against the Avs or something...
