Brian Burke is laughing his ass off over the top-5 pick coming his way.

Yup. Penner was undrafted too. One good first year in the bigs, one Stanley Cup, and high draft picks out of it.

That sucks. Anaheim doesn't deserve that pick. Mad

And depending on where the Oil finish the year, he could end up with a better defenseman than the one that he traded for Pronger.

Yeah he just turned 22, but that is one fine stats line...

Blame Lowe if you blame anyone.

Whatever, this'll be the final nail in his coffin. Wait, no, make that second-to-last. The final nail will be when Katz finally takes the podium announcing himself as the new owner.

Maybe that's what the extra $20 million was for in the most recent offer. To buy Lowe out of the new 5-year deal that they gave him.

Well, obviously it's Lowe's fault, but I wish it had turned out differently because:

1) Burke's ego couldn't be more inflated
2) While Edmonton management sucks, their players (including Horcoff) play hard and with a lot of passion, which might be part of the reason for the injury plauge this team has had I suppose
3) I kind of wanted one of those crazy RFA signings to work and it be a real factor rather than the imagined fear factor that it currently is.

The reason for #3? I'd love for teams to dare others to pick their RFA's from them. It makes for much more exciting armchair management than any trade scenario, IMO. I want a guy like Kevin Lowe to go out there and say... "You know what, Mr. Pitkanen? Maybe someone does think you're worth $4m+ for 5 years. I don't, but maybe someone else does. Go ahead and find that sucker. I'll take the 3 draft picks and sign Mark Streit for 3 years, $7.5m instead."

It's an option that shouldn't be feared by GM's... which is of course what they're doing right now.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/morrison/2008/02/going_forward_future_of_oilers.html

Basically says that Lowe will have to swallow his pride, forget about the draft picks that are no longer his to think about, do what's best for the team and dump assets to improve the team for the future.

And like Sask says, the path that he should take is just going to help inflate Burke's ego even more.
