at this point in his career, I would say that Saku is that third line centre...

He's still putting up points, we just need more threats. I don't care which of the theoretical 2nd and 3rd centres gets the more productive linemates, but Lapierre, Smoke, and Chips aren't answers to that.

Hell, my roommate even pointed out how Saku didn't show up. He rarely watches the Habs, and has no idea that it's pretty much par for the course now, unless he reads my comments here without my knowledge or something.

Dunno - but every time he talks, it's that philosophical kind of talk that usually means the guy won't be with the team.

I don't know what to make about the Hossa buzz/need to create buzz. I can't see Gainey not including Ryder in any trade, and if so, I fear Higgins might be in the mix - and that would suck.

But hey - anything said during this time is pure bullshit anyways. Between any two teams, there's about 10 people who really know what's going on, and two of them are the secretaries... sorry... Executive Assistants.

Ryder will likely play on Saturday.

Trading for Hossa doesn't seem as far fetched idea as before. Allow me to explain:

We have 30M tied up in salaries next season, and most of our good players are under contract (AK, Maxim, Gorges and Halak are RFA's, and shouldn't cost much to bring back). Streit is the only UFA we would like to bring back, and he could cost 3M a season, easily.

Saku and Kovalev become UFA's after next season. If Saku comes back it will likely be with a paycut, and Kovalev will be re-examined after next season. Both will be evaluated on a season-to-season basis.

That leaves a lot of money and the potential to add a major free agent or two in the next two seasons.

If Gainey thinks Hossa is the man for him, maybe he would prefer trading for him now and signing him to a long-term deal (how about 4 years/28M?)

Now it could be more prudent to wait until July to sign on the open market without giving up any players/picks but this presents two risks. 1) Hossa could then negotiate with other teams and may get a better offer elsewhere 2) we're still trying to win this season

So Hossa represents a chance to win today and over a 4-5 year period. He could be worth dealing a couple of young players. Not sure who specifically Waddell would target in a deal.

Supposedly Waddell wants some defensive prospects in particular... O'Byrne, Valentenko, McDonagh, Fischer, Subban, Emelin... who knows which one or two would go out of that bunch. Heck, might as well throw Gorges' name into the mix since he's pretty young.

With Lehtonen and Pavelec in their system, the likelihood they'd strongly desire Halak is diminished.

Higgins would have to be a consideration in a move of that magnitude.... although as a rental, maybe not.

I don't think it has anything to do with the cap. The only issues are who Waddell wants in return, and whether Hossa is willing to do sign. I'd be very surprised if Gainey trades prospects for anyone that he could lose in the offseason.

Well it has to do with the cap because signing Hossa would set us back 7M per season. It's obvious if Gainey trades for Hossa it's because he'll get an opportunity to negotiate a long-term deal beforehand. We don't have much money tied up next year or subsequent years, which is good.

On CFCF, Ron Reusch, Mitch Melnick and Jacques Demers all agreed that they would trade Higgins and Ryder for Hossa. They assume Waddell wants younger, NHL players because they still have to win the division.

Demers: "Higgins is a great person and he's a better player than we've seen this year, but Hossa is a superstar and we don't have that."

There you go.

What I meant was that cap space wasn't going to be an issue in this trade. Trading Higgins is a difficult prospect for me - he just strikes me to be in the Francis-mold. And Hossa.... yeah.. talent galore...but...

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I think that the asking price will be too much for Gainey. If this 2010, then I think Gainey would be more willing to give up prospects.

I don't believe that one. There's no pressure on Calgary to make that deal right now. They could try and dump Tanguay for a Demitra-like return at the draft... why now for an inferior player for your playoff drive?

I love how on TSN they got Gainey to say he was looking for an "impact" player, and they just assumed it was an offensive player. He could be looking to add Boyle or Campbell rather than Hossa. We are in the top 5 in goals for but are in the bottom half in goals against... and we give up more shots than we shoot.

Boyle or Campbell or even Jackman paired with Hamer would take a load of Frankie and Curious Georges.

Gainey has the best poker face in the game. You don't know what he's thinking until it's too late and he's beaten you over the head with it.

We know he's looking to add, but who and for who? No clue.

It's exciting.

Right now all the big names are being linked to the Habs because they have the young depth to make something happen. Most teams simply can't afford to trade a young player on an entry level deal or a prospect.

That's why if Gainey is targeting a particular player, he can outbid anyone at this point.

When was the last time we could say that?

Seriously, knowing what it would cost to bring them in, which player/course of action would you prefer?

Hossa
Richards
Sundin
Fedorov
Jokinen
Tanguay
A defenceman
A depth guy
Standing pat

scorer or 2nd pairing d-man at a good price. If not available leave it as it is. The Habs will not win the cup this year anyway.
