So now trade rumors are abounding, the latest surrounding Dan Boyle. What do you do if you're Jay Feaster. You have three of the most talented and dynamic players in the league on offense, and one go-to guy on defense (albeit recovering from a major injury). However you have glaring holes everywhere else and not much in terms of viable prospects on the farm.

So just a hypothetical, what would you do if you were Jay Feaster? Keep Vinny and jettison everyone else? Do a complete rebuild? Or keep the big three (and/or Boyle) and just hope you can eventually fill in the gaps?

It really sucks that Denis never worked out for them, considering that they gave up a big chunk of secondary scoring in Modin to get him.

Pick up Ilya Brygalov off of waivers.

Whoops.

Tampa has shown that you can't have an extremely top-heavy payroll unless you spend up near the cap, because you won't be able to fill out your roster with much else, but everyone knows that by now...

Lecavalier and St. Louis are value for their money. I just don't see any reason to move those two and replace them with players adding up to their salary that won't perform nearly to their level.

Their secondary scoring is fucking brutal. Ouellet and Jan Hlavac? No wonder Richards is -2123. If would have been nice if Afanasenkov has showed any scoring touch, but that's not the only reason that they're lacking. Ward and Gratton are serviceable on their third line I guess. They have some decent pieces on D.

Ryan Craig coming back from a sophmore season that didn't see him progress might have been nice but I guess he's been hurt.

Stop drafting every single 6'5 defenseman and 6'5 "project forward" available.

Given the dearth of prospects and secondary scoring, it seems like they need to improve their scouting ranks...

They should've offered a 7th rounder or something equally ridiculous. I'm pretty sure Burke would've rather seen him outside the Pacific division and gotten something....anything....in return.

Have the Lightning drafted any good NHLers since the Lecavalier/Richards draft in '98?

Well, not many. Here's a summary:

Sheldon Keefe, Fedor Fedorov, Nikita Alexeev, Brian Eklund (he of one NHL emergency callup), Alex Svitov, Evgeni Artukhin, Paul Ranger, Frederik Norenna, Ryan Craig, Matt Smaby (he of 4 games this year), Gerald Coleman (another emergency callup), Nick Tarnasky, Mike Lundin, Karri Ramo...

That's ridiculously bad. Some of those guys wouldn't have even made it if drafted by a team that didn't pencil in Jan Hlavac as their 2nd line LW.

So if I'm Jay Feaster, I start looking at another profession. After using Dudley's notes in '02 (the draft that yielded Ranger, Norrenna, and Craig), he's drafted worse than LBJ.

Recently, he only had 4 draft picks in 2006, one of which he wasted on ex-Blade Dane Crowley (I didn't ever realize he was drafted), and traded his 2007 1st rounder for Shane O'Brien. He also penciled in Jan Hlavac as his 2nd line LWer.

Anyone who thinks it's the big 3/4 salaries keeping the Lightning from improving is an idiot.

Too bad Svitov and Arthukin high-tailed it back to Russia - they had potential.

I agree though, Feaster is not exactly a great judge of talent. Too many Nolan Yonkman-types and not enough quality first-rounders. At least this year they should get a blue chipper.

Boyle is back and has given the Bolts a much-needed boost. So do ya trade him now? I say no, he's much too valuable. However I think it's high time Tampa looks into trading Brad Richards...he does you no good if he hasn't anyone with even halfway decent scoring talent to set up. Wouldn't mind the Avs getting into the mix if that were the case...

On TSN they said Boyle wants a Timmonen deal... 8 years, around $6.5m cap hit, really front-loaded. I can't imagine even the new onwers being able to pay him that.
