Same rules, 5 pucks = Worth watching / following, one puck = fuggedaboutit, and a Bettman for the truly bad show.

Dexter, Showtime

I don't get Showtime on my Dish Network package, but I'm very tempted to get it just for this show. I picked up the Season One, four-disk set at Blockbuster and was immediately hooked.

What do you get when a serial killer uses his power for 'good' and not evil? You get Dexter, a blood spatter expert for the Miami Police by day, and stalker / hunter of serial killers by night. Dark, with a good dose of humor, some full frontal, and lots of body parts. I highly recommend this one - lots of fun. Can't wait to d/l Season 2 at home...

I'm getting seasons 5-7 of Star Trek DS9 on DVD for Xmas. As for current shows, I'm watching the new seasons of Rescue Me and Weeds for the first time (late to the dance I know).

Weeds has become too smug for my liking (Marie-Louise Parker is the MILF to end all MILFs though).

Rescue Me has always been this weird mix of heavy-handed and outright unbelievable, but there was this one scene where Tommy and his wife are telling a therapist about all the crazy shit that's happened to them since the show started, and it showed how Leary and Tolan still have a sense of humour about it.

Agreed on MLP, she is all kinds of hot.

Fell off of Rescue Me and all other FX shows when I moved, gonna have to get the box sets sometime I guess.

DS9...there's a show I haven't seen in a while, I haven't watched a single episode since it went off the air. It's a real shame, the show really should have stopped right after season 6, it fell WAY off in season 7 when it became "Bermanized," before that he pretty much left well enough alone and from seasons 3-5 it stands as the best Trek has ever had to offer.

Got the third (and final I think) season of Veronica Mars for the g/f as she was a huge fan of the show. Unfortunately I left it at my Dad's house so I'll have to give it to her after Christmas... Mad

I just caught the premiere of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Pretty much exactly what I expected: robots, explosions, running around, car chases, naked people traveling through time. 300 lady did a good job playing the courageous/bat shit insane protagonist. Firefly girl plays a hot Terminator protector, and she seemed alright too.

I'll watch again, and it might prompt me to watch T2 again (which remains a real fave of mine).

I'll have to try and catch the premiere episodes, I watched last night's deal about a geek whose chess-playing AI computer apparently is one of the key components to what becomes the terminators, thought it was pretty standard and boring, and Summer Glau's character was by far the most annoying on Firefly, and amazingly enough she annoyed me even more here. Lena Headey was about the only thing worth watching on this one.

Bottom line, while I loved the first two Terminator films, the robots have been around so long they've ceased being scary. I realize they're trying yet another "reboot" of a venerable old franchise, but this one's too little, too late. Not to mention they're already planning another trilogy of films...why even bother watching this?

The US networks had been scrambling to pick up cable and Canadian shows. I know Dexter was about to air on CTV... not sure about US networks.

But a ton of Canadian shows had just been picked up and were about to start airing. Wonder what that means for those shows.

Knight Rider

Well...not as bad as I thought it was going to be. Still not good, but it at least exceeded very low expectations.

The car isn't entirely bad once you get past the fact that the entire pilot movie is a glorified Ford commercial. Some of the sci-fi aspects of the show were fun, though DAMMIT where are the fucking TURBO BOOST and PURSUIT buttons!?!? I loved the fact that he had those buttons and seemingly every week they did something different. Laughing

One thing if this is indeed going to be picked up as a show. Even Transformers kept the GM references somewhat within the parameters of good taste. The constant Ford references are beat over your head like a club non-stop. The differences between the commercials and actual show are few and far between, there's even a series of ads featuring the show's star and the new KITT.

All in all though while some aspects of the show were fun this is not something I'd recommend. Admittedly the original sucked too in retrospect, but at least the original never really took itself that seriously. This one tries too hard to incorporate needless drama and backstory, and to make matters worse tries to get this Justin Bruening kid to express all of that, even though as an actor he makes "The Hoff" look like Daniel Day-Lewis.

Bottom line, if you're gonna make this into an actual show, just go all balls-out dammit...get me some cheesy over-the-top villains with bad dialogue and even badder mustaches, get me some gratuitous skin shots of damsels in distress or gun-toting vixens, get me a whole lot of needless car chases...have FUN for cryin' out loud...maybe then I'll buy your damned car.

Oh and ya gotta feel sorry for Val Kilmer. To go from the Iceman and Jim Morrison to being the last-minute replacement to voiceover a car originally voiced over by G.O.B. from Arrested Development...someone needs to fire his agent.

Two pucks.

Is anyone watching In Treatment?

Josh and I caught up on the first 2 weeks last weekend, and have been glued to it ever since.

The show airs 5 nights a week, with each night showing a session with a different patient. On the 5th night, Gabriel Byrne (who plays the psychiatrist fighting his own demons), has his own session with a former colleague played by Dianne Weist.

I don't know how long the season will last, given that in 4 weeks there have been 25 shows. But it's amazing to go through each episode feeling like a fly on the wall. Josh and I both feel like we are examining our own lives and relationships more closely, and it's been very therapeutic.

I highly recommend this show.

Anyone other than me watching Jericho? Absolutely jaw-dropping episode last night. I love how they're bringing in a lot of real-life issues from the Iraq war (like the corrupt corporate soldiers running amok) without making the show seem too political. I really do miss Gerald McRaney's character though...

And the altered flag alone (my current avatar) to me is disturbing as all hell.

I got a preview of the first three episodes before the season started and it was awesome. Sadly I missed the most recent episode. I'm going to have to fix that.

New Amsterdam

Warning: Minor spoilers below, but I really don't think you're going to care much if you read them ahead of time.

The story of a man living in the 1600s (as the title would suggest) who is killed and then resurrected by Native Americans, he is told he'll only die if and when he finds his true love.

Well it's about as exciting as you might expect. Imagine "Highlander" without the swords and far fewer flashbacks. The one and only thing different and interesting here is that unlike the immortals in the former series/movies, John Amsterdam actually can and does have children, as we find out later that his closest confidant, a 65-year-old man named Omar, is actually his son.

By that at least you get the idea of why Amsterdam is so desperate to stop living forever, why it sucks to be immortal--it's hinted he's had more than one child, and he's outlived them all. But we only get an idea...the actors and script just never convey any real depth. And the show was hyped because he's a detective working with 400+ years of experience, but the mysteries he solves are so contrived me and the g/f had them guessed out about 15 minutes in.

Bottom line, the characters are shallow and with little chemistry, and the main conceit of the show (guy has to find his true love) just doesn't hack it for me. I'd rather see guys getting beheaded and lightning and all that than this, or better yet, a bloodsucking vampire. This show tries and fails miserably to put a new spin on an old plotline.

The Mighty Boosh - British Sketch Comedy - Download it via the pirate bay if you don't have BBC

The new Dr. Who - Fucking brilliant and well written. I just finished the episodes starring Chris Eccleson as the Dr and I'm having a hard time watching David Tennent right now, though he's beginning to grow on me. I have to get caught up for th 2008 shows that are soon to air - though they may be the last Dr who for a while as Tennant has a gig starring as Hamlet for the RSC and is putting the series on hold for a while...

As far as the continuity of the series goes there can only be two more actors after Tennant to play the Doctor, after that he has essentially run out of lives--though I'm sure the writers can think up something if they so chose. I too loved Eccleston's Doctor, probably the best ever (I still have a soft spot for Tom Baker's version though), but Tennant does a good enough job. Apparently he wrote in class as a child that one day he wanted to play Doctor Who on TV.

There's been a spinoff you might want to check out starring Captain Jack, it's called "Torchwood" if you haven't heard of it, I haven't seen any episodes but it's been a huge hit and may very well outlast Who.
