The market for outfielders that have "40-40" potential is, in a word, saturated.

He's a good prospect, yes. I'd take Ellsbury over him though. And for a young lefty stud? C'mon...

Really? That's odd considering only four people have ever done it in the history of baseball. Five actually: Vlad Guerrero did it in 2002 for the 'Spos, but had an obvious homer inexplicably taken away from him.

I know what you're saying about over-exaggerating prospects, but Adam Jones is a major young talent. Seriously, don't believe me, believe Baseball America and every other major baseball publication.

The NY Mets are his favorite squadron.

Ok, any deal with Yanks I've heard about almost always includes Melky. Are they trying to fool teams into thinking that they're getting Miguel, or is Melky actually more than a utility guy?

Yikes, the Yanks and Sox were offering more, and I don't buy the benefits of getting him out of the AL. It was worth it to pick up an Ellsbury or Hughes.

Melky's a damn good center fielder.

"Almost" official - Santana will pitch for the NY Mets.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3220894

Really, I'm almost relieved now, as I didn't want to see the Sox lose Ellsbury. Not to mention, Lester & Buchholz.

Crisp is still avail. though however!

That's IT!? That's all the Twinkies got? Not one fuckin' roster player? What a jip...how could the Yankees not fork over a package like that?

Odd indeed ... at least it's the Mets & not the Yankees (and Red Sox kept there 2 young pitchers & Ellsbury)

You sound like Brian Sabean. I'm disappointed for the Twins not because they didn't get roster players (I'm sure they could have traded Santana for Chris Gomez), but that they got neither the Mets best pitching prospect (Pelfrey) or their best hitting prospect (Martinez). They just got 'meh' prospects.

Given Santana is considered by many to be THE best pitcher in baseball, I would think trading him would've snagged a young, talented roster player and some "meh" prospects, or at least a packaged of top-notch prospects and a semi-decent utility player. But some prospects no one's ever heard of? The Yanks got tons of those...unreal.

Only probably 4 teams could afford to ink Santana (Dodgers being the other), but I still think both Yanks & Sox were putting together a better package - based on the reports at least. Phil Hughes & Cabrera?

In all fairness, I don't know the guys the Mets put on the table .... 3 pitching prospects if I recall right? ONe of them is bound to be pitching in Santana's spot.

Who knows, maybe that was the market for the guy. He does make a ton of dough. Still. the BoSox and Yanks have never been particularly frugal... it is weird...

And yeah, I have zero problem with not getting a "roster player" back as long as the prospect or prospects you get back are legit...

By most accounts, the Mets had the 4th best offer on the table of all the teams interested. Some reports even said the Red Sox lowered their offer when the Twins called seeking the "final best offer"
Cashman was extremely reluctant to part with Hughes, and was relieved when the Twins also demanded the Yanks other top pitching prospect (Kennedy?)
which allowed him to pull the trade off the table

I kinda think the Twins bluffed themselves into a corner, and after their hottest (and richest) suitors got cold feet, they got desperate ( but they didn't want to look like they were conceding and take a worse offer than they had initially rejected)

That, and they really wanted to keep Santana out of the American League Laughing

I think, apart from the Twins, the Yankees are the biggest losers of this trade
They needed Santana more than the Red Sox did for certain, but I can understand their hesitation to give up Hughes AND their other top pitching prospect, then be faced with signing a pitcher who already rejected 20 million per year. If Santana signs with the Mets for only 20 M/year, the Twins gotta be saying "WTF?"
I wonder how hard it is to attract premier free agents who know you are losing two of your best players

Turns out Schilling has a career-threatening shoulder injury.

Oh well. At least it means Lester and Buchholz both get rotation spots.

Wow! WTF .... Mad

Why is this just being picked up now? What a bunch of bullshit .... I just had that gut feeling he had pitched his last game w- the Sox & was psyched when he signed the 1 yr deal this past Winter.

Man, after Santana has been traded/signed for that matter - now we find out. Is Lester & Buc. up to the task here? Confused Didn't the Sox hang on to Tavares to work the bullpen or did he take a hike Question Well I think Sabathia is a FA after this coming season!

He agreed in November to a contract that allows him to earn an addition $5 million in performance and weight bonuses.

Man, only if somebody would give me some weight bonuses!

Until then, I'll be chowing pizza & wings during tonite's game & washing em' down w- Miller Lite.

With spring training about to start... I think this thread is officially obsolete.

E.L. might as well start up the 2008 Thread with some predictions or something. Time for lock down.

And what if people want to continue to discuss the 2007 season?
