My friend once took in a dog who had been left tied to a post along the Trans-Canada highway. The poor dog had two permanent cuts above its lip and his owner has clearly hadn't been feeding him.
That was ten years ago, today the dog is still alive and well (minus wonky knees).
It's sad because he still gets scared whenever someone in the room stands up quickly holding a newspaper/stick/shoe.
People forget, dogs don't. _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. Luckily, I am one.

Oh I agree re Pitt Bulls, I think they are genetically programmed such that they are a risk to snap at any moment... but a living thing is a living thing. It's not his fault he was born a Pitt Bull, and nothing, even the most surly creature alive, deserves that... |

Take this with a grain of salt because I've never owned a dog, but this is what I've heard from talking to people with dogs...
I've heard that the Pit Bull is one of the most loyal breeds alive. All they want to do is please their master...They've also been bred to be insanely strong for their size, and with an aggressive streak. So when you combine that with some prick who mistreats the thing and makes the thing aggressive, then yeah, they're dangerous. I've heard that the loyalty thing seems to be the source of a lot of the aggressive behaviour with those dogs. I'm not trying to be defensive about pit bulls because I really have no reason to be, but that's just the other side of the argument that I've heard.
Like parents with their kids, it seems that it's bad owners that make bad dogs. It's much easier for the public to blame the dog's breed instead of the asshole mistreating it and teaching it to be aggressive. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

It's absolutely 100% the fault of the owner if a dog becomes vicious or unfriendly. It's just that some breeds require a hell of a lot more discipline and care and socialization than others. Shar Peis and Chows require a ton of training and a ton of socialization at an early age to overcome their disposition (Shar Peis were originally bred to be guard dogs so they're naturally predicated to be rather unfriendly to anyone other than their owner). Same goes for Pit Bulls. Not saying that you can get a Chow to be as cute and cuddly as, say, a cocker spaniel, but any kind of dog, even a Pit, can be a good family dog, you just gotta work way harder with a breed like that to get them that way.
Shadow (Lab/Pointer mix) is friendly as all hell to me and my father of course, and he absolutely loves girls of all kinds and little kids, but around big guys he tends to get very defensive, especially around my father with whom he's insanely protective. It's our fault he's like that because we didn't take a lot of time when he was a puppy to socialize him with all different kinds of people, other than that he's the greatest and friendliest dog ever. |

This is pretty much true. Pitbulls are some of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet and it it sad that they get taken advantage of the way they do.
When you combine their strength with their need to please and add in some fuckstick that is willing to exploit that... you get the pitbull they talk about on the news.
When you see a shitty dog you know there is a shitty owner. Just like parenting. _________________

what happened to that dog is just wrong!
Pitbulls are instinctivly bred to kill. It's in their nature. Some may be nicer than others due to good proper training but there is always that chance that they may attack.
It's like saying that you can teach a border colie not to heard something. good luck with that. it's instinct. Colies are a damn nippy bread to.
Try teaching a labrador not to fetch something. they were bred for duck hunting because of their soft grip. it aint gonna happen. it's instinct. of course some labs can be vicious as well.
It does come down to some training alot of the time, but to say it's 100% the owner isn't true. You can't take the instinct out of the animal.
Try teaching a man to not look at a hot chick when she walks by him. It aint gonna happen! |

Yeah, well it was right around the skirt line . I'm fine, it was really nothing much. Left thigh, I hope that won't be a problem with you.
The problem is that it was right in front of my daughter's (and her mom's) apartment door. Fucker got out of it's apartment (down the hall) and started snarling and fucking sprinting right at the three of us. I put myself in between my six year old daughter and the dog and it chomped me. Had my daughter been wandering around the hallway and that fucker got loose without me or Hannah's mom around who knows what the consequences could have been.
I feel badly because the owners are really nice. They've gone as far as offering to put the dog down. I don't want that, I'm not that injured. But what if it does get loose and Hannah is alone in the hallway. They've admitted that it is a "problem dog". They're trying to train it and I commend them for taking on such a task. The problem is that my daughter is now at risk. When I went back to the apartment to talk with the owner about the incident the dog lunged and barked at my mom. I also saw it go for some guy in the back alley. This all happened within two hours.
I know several people who work at the SPCA so I'm talking to them about what to do. I really don't think that such an animal ought to be living in an apartment. I want the problem gone and the more I think about it the more I think that the dog should be put down. I know it's not really the dog's fault but I don't want my little girl to pay because some fucks didn't train it properly. |

Yeah Farang, as bad as you might feel about the dog, it's simply not your fault. And your #1 priority is to protect and have a safe envrionment for your daughter. Obviously the dog will not be a part of that, so if they are able to find another home for the dog, that would be good. But if not, then it looks like their own offer is the only safe course of action... _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Honestly, if the dog is acting like this then the owners have fucked up and need to have the dog removed from their care.
As far as putting it down, that should be left up to a professional. See if you can get them to contact a dog rescue/shelter in the area. There is a chance that they will take the dog. They can then evaluate the dog to find out if it is too far gone to be trained. _________________

| Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm thoroughly convinced the dog has to go. I talked to a friend of mine who works with a group that tries to help out pit bulls that have a history of problems. She's going to come over and assess the dog, but as you guys have said the dog's got to go. |
