Joe Corvo is a really good puck moving defenceman - something I believe your team needs.
I don't see this as being a firesale, I see this as dealing apparent strength for apparent strength.
Carolina are 6th in goals-per-game this season, but 17th in PP. The Hurricanes defence has only combined for 12 goals this season, and none of their defencemen are currently averaging 20 minutes a game. Corvo will make this team more dynamic.
He'll do what Kaberle, Gleason, Babchuk, Tanabe and Hutchinson couldn't - provide a constant offensive threat from the blueline. He makes a good first pass out of the zone.

I do not think this team could be serious about this season and make this trade. I was at the point that I don't think its all the players anymore that its the system/coaching. Lavi doesn't seem to change his system no matter what. Instead of adapting to the players he has he adapts the players he has to what he wants.
Oh well I'll be rooting for AO and the caps in the playoffs!

Perhaps the best thing in the long run is not just this season, but to look at what they could get for some of their assets and what it would do for the team in the future. They got a decent puck-moving defenseman at a good price, and a good young guy with upside if he can get healthy. They got this for two pending UFA. Who knows, maybe they can bring back Stillman and or Fro, but they just took two guys that they would potentially lose at the end of the season. It might not be good for this season, but it could definitely be good for the long run.
