DOA: Dead or Alive

I don't know why people hated the movie so much. It features hot multi-cultural chicks in bikinis fighting each other, a volleyball game scene, and the fight scenes are fun (although they overdo the harness effects).

It features fairly well-known actors, including Jaime Pressly, Sarah Carter and Holly Valance. Kevin Nash is funny in a bit role. The dialogue is awesomely cheesy - the right tone for this kind of movie.

Altogether a solid B-Hong Kong pic (in english).

Jumper

I have a soft spot for silly sci-fi movies, but this one is pretty devoid of character and feeling. I was really looking forward to seeing Rachel Bilson playing something other than a valley girl, and it turns out she wasn't acting on the O.C. She looks great and has a few one-liners, but she doesn't sound like a girl from Michigan.

The special effects are pretty cool, but very little is explained, we don't get much back story, and the ending sets up a sequel without providing closure. The movie seriously feels about an hour long. Also, the British Jumper is cooler than Hayden Vader - to the surprise of no one.

On the plus side, I saw the movie on a DLP screen, which is like a huge HDTV. It exposes some of the weaknesses in the special effects, oddly enough. There were also some jaggies on the 20th C Fox logo.

A note to the makers of I am Legend:

Just because you have the budget to make a film where 99% of the shit you see is made with a computer doesn't mean that you should.

Once

The plot is pretty threadbare--struggling Irish musician meets up with a Czech immigrant and make beautiful music together, blah blah blah, but really, it's the music that makes this film shine. Don't let the "modern-day musical" label scare you away from this one. I'm no fan of musicals as a rule and loved this one.

May 22nd. That young buck, Harrison Ford, 65, reprises his role as Indiana Jones...

Michael Clayton

Predictable. Mildly interesting.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

I'm not the biggest Apatow fan, but this might be the best one yet. Worth watching for the amazing Billy Baldwin (!) cameo. Apatow basically just brought his name to the pic, this is all Jason Segel's movie since he wrote and starred in it. All the characters in Hawaii are great fun.

The only thing I didn't like is how Sarah Marshall gets a raw deal in the end, since she really isn't that horrible a person. It seemed strange that we were rooting for her to fail considering she seemed just as messed up as her boyfriend.

Is Ironman the second-best comic book movie (after Spiderman 2)? Sounds promising...

And as much as I liked the Spiderman movies, I still liked the Xmens better.

I liked the first one but the last two not so much.

Just saw Iron Man. It was good, but not as legendary as the reviews are making it sound. The end in particular just sort of reminded me of Robocop II (mixed with Transformers).

Tip: Stay 'till the end of the credits! Moviegoers ought to know this by now, and yet the doofuses in my theatre still almost all left.

Saw this last night... Agree with you that it was quite good but not remarkable. Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark turned out much better than I thought, and Jeff Bridges channeled Kris Kristofferson better than Kris Kristofferson ever was. Despite the formulaic plot, it still did most things well.

Transformers (due to the Megan Fox factor) > Ironman >> Spiderman 3

Dragged the g/f to Iron Man last night. She was a bit bored but even she admitted it wasn't bad. I loved it. Shocked by the ending especially, since the *spoiler warning* public revelation of his identity as Iron Man wasn't incorporated until recently.

Best parts to me were the updates (both Stark's captors and Yinsen were Vietnamese in the comic) and the tie-in between Stane's Iron Monger suit and the original Iron Man (Stane just made his own suit in the comic).

Also interesting were the Arab terrorist's references to Genghis Khan. The movie-makers were envisioning this as a trilogy, where Stark eventually succumbs to alcoholism, Rhodey then takes over as Iron Man II/War Machine, and the rise of the Mandarin. In the comics, the Mandarin is a direct descendant of Genghis Khan, I think.

Thanks for letting me know about the end credit thing. Very nice thing at the end there for the geeks to munch on...

Yeah, I had heard about Samuel Jackson as Sgt. Nick Fury... How ironic that he plays a good guy in this movie, and he played Elijah Price in Unbreakable...

The ending was a great departure from the whole secret identity-thing - it should make for more interesting sequels and so on... I thought Favreau did a great job.

Oh yeah, one question running through my head as the climactic battle was going on -- Stane is doing this all 'for the company,' is he not? Did he really think his shareholders and consumers might not notice that he was hitting the town in a giant suit and wreaking havoc? Where did he plan to go if he got away, exactly?

Well, if you're going to go there, if terrorists have "Stark Industries" -branded guns, missiles, and other equipment, why don't they slap down an embargo on all weapons sales by Stark Industries and investigate? Wouldn't the shareholders be up in arms that these weapons are in the wrong hands?

Didn't you see the "Please check in your common sense-radar at the door" signs before you went into the theater?

I got the impression Stane was more just tired of living in the shadow of the Stark family rather than just interested in keeping the company afloat. He seemed more cornered than anything else when he donned the suit, so I could suspend my disbelief.

I'm sure a far more clever megalomaniac would've thought of a much more subtle way to take care of Pepper Potts before she could get away with the evidence, but as always, if the villains were that smart, the good guys would never win.

You should not overlook the respectable eye candy Leslie Bibb represents in Iron Man, a perfect balance of integrity and sluttiness.

I didn't think she was all that... Maybe I couldn't see past her sluttiness to see her integrity... Were they of the B or C variety?
