I'm stumped, anyone have any good trade ideas? I'm not looking for rumours, I'm looking for us to use our deductive powers to figure out what each team needs and how they're going to get them.
We know San Jose wants another top-4 defenceman.
We know Ottawa needs another forward.
Detroit always adds a player at the deadline.
We know four teams in the Southeast have a chance at the division, with Atlanta being the most desperate.
I figure all the playoff-bound teams need depth at D.
We know Hossa won't re-sign with Atlanta, but we also know Atlanta wants NHL players.
We know NYR needs another D. They don't have much to give up.
Any ideas? I'll give a few later. _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. Luckily, I am one.

Not sure yet, it's harder this year than ever IMO to see a clear-cut line between the buyers and sellers. There are some obvious sellers (Los Angeles, Toronto) but given the relative parity throughout the league, who will make the decision to part with assets and bulk up, and which ones will slim down and wait until next year?
I'll start at least with the team I know the best--the Avs. Again they're on that will-they-or-won't-they precipice. Last year they decided to remain with the roster almost fully intact and went on a spectacular run that fell just one point short of the playoffs. This year injuries have decimated them, leaving them a thoroughly mediocre squad in all aspects of the game. I don't envy Giguere...he could part with some valuable assets and try to make one last push, or pull the plug.
At present the most tradeable assets if he were to do so are Tyler Arnason, Andrew Brunette, Ian Laperriere, and John-Michael Liles (in other words, not much). None look to fit in to the Avs' long-term plans, so best to get something for them now. Jose Theodore might also be had, but given that he's playing well and the Avs are still screwed in net, Giggy should at least try and sign him...if that should fail, flip him now and hope maybe he comes back as a free agent.
There's also the prospect of trading away some young players if the return is good enough. I'm of the mind at this point that Wojtek Wolski and T.J. Hensick will just never pan out--neither one works hard enough IMO and you simply can't teach that. Much as I have chastised the Avs in the past for parting with young talent for minimal returns, if the price was right and they could beef up that deplorable blueline, I would send both players packing. |

Kaberla waves and trade him to San Jose.
Figure something like Kaberla for Wishart and the late first rounder as the principle, then lesser picks and players can tweak it from both sides as need be.
Then again looks like Kabs is going to be a sucky baby.

I'd like to see Detroit get Adam Foote or Barret Jackman. I don't want to know what the price tag would be. A first rounder...but Detroit's is late, so probably a swap of later picks or a middle-to-lower tier prospects. However, that kind of deal isn't Detroit's style unless there's at least another year attached.
Smolinski will be traded

I wonder how many teams will see an opportunity in a seller's market to gain in the long term by selling some assets even though they may be in the playoff picture. You could say that about Rutherford. Regier?
As long as Waddell is around, he's inflate the hell out of the market for potential UFA's. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Habs could use Jackman as a rental...
He has grit and he's stable.
markov komi
hammer Jackman
Then give point time on the Pee pee to Streit and the bottom pair being some combo of the following
georges
cube
breezer
obyrne
dandy
streit...
with Streit as a 3rd / 4th line forward most of the time and dandy and Breezer watching the game with a latte from the pressbox, the bottom pair could be a platoon of:
George, Cube and Obyrne.
Then we end up with a pretty tough d core. _________________ Thank god the reign of W is about to end. Could a person be more dense? |

| Why do Euro players want to stay in Toronto? I can see the Ontario boys wanting to stay home, but the others? Odd... |

No real pressure. Toronto fans will love their players, no matter what. It's not a particularly demanding market if you can build brownie points with the Leaf faithful. _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. Luckily, I am one.

Seriously? Who on the Leafs honestly gets a rough ride from fans? Can you name any from the past 10 years (other can completes sieves like Raycroft and Berg, who seriously don't get it that bad considering they aren't even NHL calibre players)?
Ever booed your captain?
Ever booed your team out of the building?
Ever stopped showing up to games?
Ever got a player run out of town due to constant harassment?
Ever turn your back on a warrior after a couple of bad games?
Ever demanded change after another mediocre season?
Ever got a captain traded?
Not bloody likely. Toronto puts useless thugs like Belak and Domi on a pedestal. Players love playing in Toronto because they know there's no precedent of success to live up to, and the fans don't demand anything.
You can't possibly say playing in TO is remotely as tough as playing in Montreal, Philly, Detroit or New York? _________________ It seems like you need to be a physics professor to choose the right TV. Luckily, I am one.

Larry Murphy had it rough.
Antropov has been booed.
I'm not saying it's one of the toughest markets, but it's also not one of the easiest. _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

Murphy is the Leafs' cautionary tale. They're restrained because of that.
If it wasn't for Don Cherry bashing the Euros, no one would get bashed anymore. They even relented on McCabe earlier this year. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater.
