Communist icon Castro bows out

Quote:
"I neither will aspire to, nor will I accept, the position of president of the Council of State and commander-in-chief," wrote Castro, almost 19 months after undergoing intestinal surgery and handing provisional power to his brother Raul Castro.

"It would betray my conscience to take up a responsibility that requires mobility and total commitment that I am not in physical condition to offer," said Castro, who has only been seen in picture and videos in frail condition since disappearing from public view in July 2006.

All eyes will now turn to the weekend assembly meeting. Any member of his inner circle is arguably a contender, although many Cuba-watchers believe Raul Castro, 76, is the leading choice.

I'm going to leave this up for now. If it starts brushing up against the fringes of OTP rules, though, it'll be locked down faster than [insert witty simile here].

I love Cuba and I've vacationed there many times. Castro will be missed, but hopefully they will keep MacDonalds and the American way out. It's so nice to go and not have to be inundated with crap upon crap. I love america too. I just like what Castro has done with his little island (bay of pigs and missel crisis aside that is)

Strange. I thought this place would be a little more thick skinned and less like kindergarten.

The Old OTP had a strict "No Politics Rule". So this is really part of that legacy.

Well Chuck, the reason we banned politics in the first place was because the fights did indeed get very "kindergarten" but to be honest most of the instigators don't come by very often these days.

In any event I'd put this under the context of historical as much as political. He's been around since my frickin' Dad was in college for Christ' sakes.

Anyway, for all the good and bad Castro's done, I'll remember him most fondly for this...

Did he resign with the Leafs? He's about the right age and nearing retirement...
