So I've been off this week doing some wall building at home and seems we average 5-7 telemarketing calls a day. How this is allowed and not banned is beyond me.
So far all I do is tell them to hold on a second and then put the phone down and come back and hang it up five minutes later when they are I assume gone.
So any effective way to deal with this when at home with an Infant running to get the phone is a pain in the ass. _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

Oh my god - I know what you mean. Josh has been home sick the last 2 days with tonsilitis, and there have been no less than 8-10 calls a day.
Apparently Canada is one of the few countries that does not have a consumer protection law from tele-solicitors.
Almost every other country in the world has some kind of 1-800 number that you can call to list your home phone number and block telemarketers.
I don't even answer numbers that are 1-800 or 1-888 - It's ALWAYS a freakin telemarketer. But the thing that pisses me off most, is that now they're calling with Private Number showing up on call display, and since half of my friends cell phones are private numbers, Josh and I always pick up.
Josh and I have become programmed in saying, "We are not interested. Take this number off your list and don't call back." If you tell them directly to take your number off their list and never to call back, they have to obey.

Most calls are coming from those auto random dialers as there is always a pause before someone clicks on the line. Sent an E-mail to my MP asking him what they are doing if anything but really what else can I do? _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

Does Canada have a "do not call list" ?
I would check that out, as there's been tons of complaints here in the States & a "do not call" list was thus created in where the company is subject to fines.

Sometimes I just play with them,I'll listen to their spiel and find out what they're selling,Than I'll ask a lot of questions leading them to think they have a huge sale on the line,Then when it comes down to the close,I'll ask them for their main competitors number so I can compare prices or I'll pull a Hounsy and ask them to hold for a second while I confer with my wife and just never come back until I am sure they're gone |

Remember that the people calling are making crap wages, are often recent immigrants, and don't like it any more than you do. Often they also represent charities or stats agencies too, which is a public good. Point being, just try to be civil -- it's not their fault.
Maureen, there is consumer protection legislation in place by way of the Competition Act (this is my area of practice). Have a look here if you like, particularly sections 52.1 and 53.
What Canada does not yet have is a do-not-call list, but it's in the works.
Telemarketing will never be eliminated though, because there will always be exemptions for charities and services to which you already subscribe (such as your bank or phone company). Really, this isn't all bad. I'd prefer everything be done by e-mail, but I have made decisions before because of a call from a business where I'm already a customer (most recently, switching back to Bell from Rogers for home phone). _________________

| Call me to tell me my security has been comprimised or to alert me of a refund I'm due. Otherwise, fuck off, I'll contact you when I want to. I'm the consumer. I just give them a firm "no thanks" and hang up the phone. If I'm not a current customer, I do NOT want to hear from you - I'm perfectly capable of seeking out whatever I need on my own... |

Usually the delay is a tipoff.
Easy solution for dealing with them:
List your name as an initial, or no first name at all. They will always as for Mr. or Mrs. whoever, or the head of the household. Tell em that they aren't home and could you take a message. If it's something important, they'll give you a message. If not, they say that they'll call back. If they ask a time, tell em next week.
Easy, respectful, and never fails. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

| I was so frustrated I got call display. Now, unless I recognize the number I don't answer the phone anymore. If it's important they'll leave a message. |
