I think at best we might have landed a 3rd rounder or two and some mid level prospect even HFboard members are ho-hum about.

Mad

It's sad that a previous GM can screw us now and for a few years after his tenure. But hey atleast we can still blame those that hired said GM.

I'd venture that the Leafs will be down a couple of second rounders and up one Yannic Perreault.

Seriously, the Leafs are going to make a run at the playoffs. Tucker has his legs again.

While I know this is hardly the righting of the Maple Leaf Franchise, Trader Cliff did OK at the deadline, considering absolutely every player worth having on the team was locked into a no trade clause. Cleared a little cap space and even got a 2nd round pick doing it.

JFJ (and the ownership that was behind him) sure has alot to answer for. Evil or Very Mad

Some asshole (McCabe) siad he would agree to a trade to a particular team ...Cliff subsequently gave that team permission to speak directly w- that player's agent. Following last night's win, the player "changed his mind".

Just heard Cliff say it himself during the press conference (of course, he didn't name the player).

Not if Wade Belak has anything to say about it. In an interview today asking who his first victim as a Panther will be:

"As for who he has his eye on for his first fight as a Panther.

"Darcy Tucker," Belak deadpanned. "He's a great teammate, but he's a pain in the butt to play against."

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I'm gonna miss the hilarity that is Mt Belak!

Did he say McCabe? Maybe Kubina was the guilty party.

Fletcher confirmed Kubina was the waffler.

Fletcher also said there were offers for Antropov and Vesa, but not good offers, and since he considers both players as rebuilding pieces for the future, he wasn't going to firesale them.

Fletcher was asked if clearing $3 mil in cap space was going to help in building for the future. His response was that "the face of the team was going to change" before October, and that "cap space wouldn't be a problem". This suggests to me that at least part of the no-trade clause club will be either traded at knife point, waived away (for those "unfortunates" who don't have a full-fledged no movement clause), or just plain bought out. It also seems to suggest that Sundin may be done as a Leaf, weither he retires in the off-season or not.

Personally, I think Antropov is not likely going to improve on his numbers from this year, and I think he should be traded now while his value is high, provided we get reasonable value in return. I would definately trade Vesa as well, since Raycroft as a starter is the quickest, easiest way into the 1st pick lottery next year that I can think of. That said, I give Cliff full marks for this trade deadline, it would have been great if he could arm-twist a few guys into waiving the no-trade clause, but he got some decent picks and $3 mil in cap space from some less than A-grade trade bait, which is about the best that could be expected from the situation.

He also got a better return on Hall Gill than Montreal got on Huet, which I think is hilarious Laughing

So far, Cliff gets a passing grade from me!

This season isn't even over yet and you're talking about tanking next season? Smile

Welcome to Leafland! Laughing

Actually, I would love to tank this year too, but I get the feeling Fletcher's talk about purging in the off-season is going to scare even the no-trade club into a "charge" similar to last season, out of the playoffs and out of a top-10 draft pick. Sad

Basically, if the Leafs are going to rebuild, they are going to have to stay bad for another year or 3 and build from the draft.

Geck makes a good point, I don't know if Fletch gets a good grade for getting a better return on Gill than Montreal did for Huet and a better return for Belak than Chicago did on Lapointe, or if those respective GMs fail Laughing

It's too bad that he couldn't get a single guy to waive a no-trade clause worth making a deal for, but not really surprising. It is a no-trade clause after all.

We'll see what happens in the off-season, because when they don't make the playoffs, Kaberle and Kubina's clauses are off...
