Basically, if the Leafs are going to rebuild, they are going to have to stay bad for another year or 3 and build from the draft. |
That's just getting picks, too. It'll take a while for the fruits of that labour to be cultivated. Long, long process ahead. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

I can't beleive TSN actually hired JFJr to break down trades. I almost spit my drink out tonight seeing him before the Bs/Sens game breaking down deals.
Well Cliff got rid of Gill for a 2R in 08 and 5R in 09. Not bad getting rid of the last year of that contract. Gill started out rough w/ the Leafs but settled down into a reliable blueliner.
Belak for a 5R 08? Uh ok I guess, not much gained or lost...
Kilger for a 3R in 08? I would say fair, although I liked Kilger. He was like a Valk in the corners and had some speed on the forecheck.
Can't say I'm not disappointed that not one of the NTC/NMC bitches of Tucker, Kabs, McCabe, or Kubina were traded but on well. Hopefully we rid ourselves of some of there contracts in the off season. I was really hoping we would at least get another 1R pick this year by trading one of the primadonnas.... |

Here's how The Star sums it up:
Kubina said he spoke with Fletcher but wanted to "keep the conversation private."
"My heart is here (in Toronto)," Kubina said. "We had a big game (Monday). We're only six points out of a playoff spot."
Kubina's no-trade protection runs out if the Leafs fail to make the playoffs this season, while Kaberle, according to a recent report, can be traded between the end of the June 2009 entry draft and Aug. 15, 2009, if the Leafs fail to make the playoffs that year. Tucker, according to the report, will have his no-trade rights reduced to a choice of 10 teams he can refuse to be traded to when he reaches the final year of his contract in 2010.
The Leafs also have buyout provisions in the collective bargaining agreement, the key one being the ability to buy out a player at the end of the season for two-thirds the value of his remaining salary.
"I can promise you one thing, come July 1 (opening of the free-agent season), we will have (salary cap clearance to sign players)," Fletcher said.
And:
TSN reported that its website registered 11.8 million page views yesterday, a 41 per cent increase over last year and the second heaviest trade deadline traffic ever. Ratings will no doubt be high, too.
Some highlights:
8 a.m. Duthie says it will take five hours to introduce the TSN commentators, which may or may not have been a joke.
8:05 a.m. Sportsnet appears to have won the fired GM derby with three on its set.
8:32 a.m. Fired Leafs GM John Ferguson Jr. defends himself against charges his no-trade deals have handcuffed successor Cliff Fletcher. "He may have been handcuffed, but he wasn't blind-sided," he says.
8:42 a.m. Score analyst Steve Ludzik tells viewers, "Ottawa has had more ups and downs than a toilet seat at a Polish wedding."
9:03 a.m. Sportsnet analyst Brian Lawton, the most impressive newcomer on the day, ends a debate on whether Mats Sundin should have waived his no-trade clause: "The ultimate act of loyalty is to let go."
9:21 a.m. Panic sets in on the Sportsnet set when renowned rumour generator Bruce Garrioch says it may be a slow day.
10:33 a.m. Sighs of relief audible as first trade announced.
11:13 a.m. Sportsnet hits day's low by showing rear view of Garrioch hitching up his pants.
11:19 a.m. New low reached as all discuss ramifications of Wade Belak trade.
11:38 p.m. All in celebratory mood as two significant deals – Brian Campbell and Brad Richards – happen in 20 minutes.
1:12 p.m. TSN panel raises handcuffs issue with Ferguson yet again, prompting Mike Milbury to offer this advice to players who don't want to be traded: "Be a damned plumber."
1:20 p.m. In what may make TV history, Duthie gets grumpy Anaheim GM Brian Burke to smile. Well, his upper lip moved, anyway.
1:36 p.m. Leafs TV reporter Melissa Hamilton interviews Duke the Dog and Peter Puck.
2:10 p.m. It's handcuffs time again on TSN. Milbury says Ferguson's deals "handcuffed" Fletcher. Pierre McGuire says they have set Leafs back two or three more years.
2:15 p.m. Duthie joins the beat-Ferguson parade: "If Cliff Fletcher's hands are tied, why make the move (to change GMs)? John Ferguson could have traded Wade Belak to Florida, right?"
2:16 p.m. Ferguson defends himself, but looks like a guy who's wondering why he took this job.

That's as good a defense as the one he put together for the Leafs. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

He should be on the board instead of the ice, he'd fit in better. _________________ psssssssssssssshhh....bing bong ping bong bing bong...pssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. |

Belak was on 102 today and didn't outright say that he had asked for a trade. However, he said that his agent spoke with Cliff to see what the Leafs had planned for him over the next while, and if they didn't have anything planned to get him into the lineup more that maybe a trade would be best so that Belak could get some more ice time in so he'd have more visibility to get a contract for next season. He was obviously still disappointed that he was traded because he said that he made more friends during his 7 years in Toronto than before he got here. He would have liked to stay and contribute more, but if that wasn't in the Leafs plans this will probably be for the better.
They also played this old clip, almost like a "This is your life" but with hilarious shit they did on the show or that he and Dean did golfing and stuff. I'm sure they'll get him on the phone now, but it sucks that he won't be on the show as often. Belak is a hilarious guy.
He found out about the trade because his agent(I think) saw it on the tsn ticker. He also said that when none of the guys waived their no-trades, he figured that being a UFA, he was probably a goner.
Awesome line:
Dean: So how come you don't have a no-trade clause?
Wade: I'm not really sure. I think me and Johnny Pohl were the only two guys on the team without one.

The Star rips into Fletcher.

The columnist is a bit misleading...how to you send a guy down to the minors or even threaten to do so when the contract explicitly states that you can't!? It's not just a no-trade clause for some of these guys, it's a no-movement clause. I was under the impression that meant you couldn't even waive or reassign the guy.
And playing hardball doesn't necessarily yield results. The Stars benched, scratched, and waived FiFi Turgeon several times to no avail. |

Good point, not to mention that signing a player to a long term deal and then turning around and treating that same player like garbage is kind of a red flag to any other players, young building blocks or otherwise, that you may want to consider signing in the off-season.
I am a little bit worried about the sudden turn-around in play from the Leafs lately, though. While the 1st overall pick would, of course, be nice, I would be happy if the Leafs got a top-10 pick this draft, and giddy if they got a top-5. Like the article mentions, we don't need to tell the players not to play, just start Raycroft alot, "experiment" with young Marlie players and "showcase" some of our movable veterns, especially Kubina, who can be traded if we miss the playoffs this year. _________________ (Working in a Call Centre) + (Being a Leafs Fan) = (One HUGE glutton for punishment)

The players want to try for the playoffs, the coach's likely only hope at staying coach is to make playoffs, and we know what the board wants. If Fletcher is sincere about the rebuild he is the only one pulling on that rope now that they have a slight glimmer of hope. _________________ psssssssssssssshhh....bing bong ping bong bing bong...pssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. |
