So where do we fall? I'm going to say 9th overall and to be honest that may be a little on the hopeful side. Mats and Vesa seem set to kill my top five dreams...asholes.

http://mirtle.blogspot.com/2008/03/how-lottery-draft-works.html

It looks like the slots from 5th to 9th will be hotly contested. Based on current projections, St. Louis will draw in 5th with 83 points, the same as Toronto and Edmonton, but with a lower win total. The Islanders and Capitals would finish with 84 points and finish 8th and 9th respectively. As you know, the 5th spot gets you a shot at 1st overall, anything less than that would put you out of that running, but still a shot to move up 5 spots in the draft order as you would still be in the lottery.

Never even considered the Florida pick as being traded to Nashville last year for Vokoun... all the publicity has been on the Edmonton pick going to Anaheim in the Penner fiasco.

In other words, the Leafs would have to finish the year on a 17-4-2 run to reach last year's non-playoff point total.

According to three different probability sites, Toronto has somewhere between a 3- and 6-per-cent chance of making the playoffs.

sportsclubstats.com: 6.5%
playoffstatus.com: 6%
behindthenet.ca: 3.6%

The troubling part, if you're a Leafs fan? Sportsclubstats reports that Toronto has a greater chance of making the playoffs than of finishing in dead last in the conference.

Oh, I give up laughing at the Leafs. It's not quite as fun anymore.

The cause is dead... we have to lose a few games to ensure no playoff, but we will win more than we lose down the stretch.

I don't know- once they are mathematically eliminated, Fletcher may get some head office clearance to start "auditioning" some Marlies and "showcasing" some of our trade bait like Raycroft, so it's possible we will at least get a bottom 7 pick or something.

But yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath. Rolling Eyes

Apparently Gord Stellick said that they'd make it to the playoffs.

Yup ... only way it looks like Leafs would have a shot at drafting one of Stamkos or Doughty would be to trade up ... unless one of the 2 slips in the draft a couple rankings.

If the Leafs fail to make the playoffs however, Kubina's "no trade" becomes void & he will be dealt.

I'm sure Raycroft was offered to 29 teams, though I still find it curious that he hasn't been placed on waivers? Pogge should be getting the bulk of the work w- the Marlies & Clemmenson backing up for the Maple Leafs. But whatever ..... who said it was a perfect world anyway!

Sadly Mats is going to start carrying this team now, of all times. Armed with a 9th overall pick (or somewhere in that area) and no other 1st round picks, the Leafs really don't have anything to deal to even allow themselves the chance to move up.

This whole quasi-winning streak has set the team back 5 years. The difference between Steven Stamkos and Joe Colborne is pretty massive for a team desperate for top shelf young talent.

That's why I see Cliff trading the pick. At that spot there isn't that young blue chipper capable of leading the new Leafs, and since the vets are going nowhere, they're better off dealing the pick for an overpriced RFA with NHL experience. Maybe after that the Leafs will have wiggle room to sign Michael Ryder. They'll try to make a run and wait for Mats to quit before doing a real rebuild.

Mats Sundin and the Leafs = Barry Bonds with the Giants
