For February

Quote:
The left winger ranked third among scorers with 20 points in 15 games as the Sabres went 8-4-3. Vanek scored 13 times and added seven assists.

Out of all the Brieres, Drurys, Dumonts, Campbells and the like, Thomas Vanek - for better or for worse - is the best chance this team has to having a real franchise, top-10 in the league-type player.

I'm not saying it's going to happen, but he has the physical tools and the offensive skills to be among the league leaders in points year after year. He's still young and this was his first season as the main guy, so despite his softness and inconsistency I can't see Regier kicking himself because of the contract.

It seems weird to essentially "pick" him over Briere, Dury, Campbell, and eventually Miller (although hopefully they lock him up THIS summer), but I don't fault their logic. In a sense Regier was forced to make his decision after Lowe made the offer sheet, but he could have easily walked away and I'm sure they considered it at least briefly.

Young players - hang on to them.
