It's still a long shot, but Ottawa might be cutting it a bit close.
With 81 points, they're still in sight of first in the conference, but another loss or two likely puts them out of the 4/5 seed range and into the 6-8 range. Buffalo is still 8 points back, but at that point it becomes more determined by the head-to-head matches with Boston and Buffalo near the end of the year.
With Alfie on the shelf... it still may not be a matter of whether they make the playoffs or not (they would have to play even worse than what they have been averaging to do that), but whether they go in with any confidence whatsoever.
I will say this... if Montreal does hold the #1 or #2 seeds... it'd still suck if we got "rewarded" with a matchup against Ottawa, no matter how badly they've been playing.
