Is it a case of overachieving? Has Claude's system worn them out? Does Shane Hnidy suck that bad? You might be able to answer yes to all of those questions...but there is no excuse to get ass paddled by the Laffs yet again this season. _________________ -UP THE IRONS! |

And also like Razz said, Timmy kept this team in the thick of things despite NO help from a ramshackle defense. He couldn't be expected to keep it up forever.
I still don't know a lot about Clode but he strikes me as the George Karl of hockey, a good coach who for some reason or other wears out his welcome very quickly. I certainly hope he does well in Boston but this team looks about a year or two away from being a truly serious contender.
Bottom line, Chimparelli is still a complete moron, he'd best be working hard to dump salary this offseason, he's only been adding it since he took over. |

There really aren't that many bad contracts in Boston. Manny and Murray are the only two eyesores (I guess Schaefer, but it's not that big of money), IMO, and they aren't ones that hold the franchise back in any form.
Ward is off the books this year, and after next year, Murray, Fernandez, Schaefer, Axelsson, and Thomas have contracts that expire. This summer, they have to try and re-up Wideman and Kobasew for significant raises, but that should be do-able.
As far as the team on ice goes, it could just be a minor bump at this point. Too early to tell. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. In two years we will be an elite contender, assuming no further boneheaded transactions or unfortunate meetings with the Flyers...
Chiarelli has been fine, IMO. Glen Metropolit was a genius signing. Alex Auld has worked out wonderfully as a backup. He didn't pay the king's ransom for help today, and that's a decision few GM's had the stomach to make. Wideman for Boyes looks better every day. Fernandez for Kalus was a mistake, but we don't know if his doctors simply missed the lingering injury.
The D hasn't been all that ramshackle this year, although part of that is Timmy and part of that is the defense first... er.... only system. Still, I want Alberts back and I want Stuart and Lashoff and Hunwick to develop quickly... |

Dude plays 25-30 minutes a night against the top lines of the opposition. They've been shutting down the stars of the league on a consistent basis. He's likely going to win our 7th man award and for good reason. This deal looks better and better for us, and worse and worse for St. Louis, with each passing game... |

Razz, I hate to burst your bubble, but Wideman will NEVER win the 7th Player Award
Being in Vancouver, you don't realize that the consensus in the Boston area is that Wideman sucks donkey dicks.
I know it's not a fair assessment, but that's the way it is
Aaron Ward is a regular on WBCN's Toucher & Rich, and people regularly call in to tell Ward they think Wideman sucks, no matter how annoyed he gets.
And I haven't checked the latest stats, but last time I did Boyes was closing in on 30 goals ... and that was a while ago.
I don't see how that makes the trade look good for Boston
Mind you, I was never a Boyes fan when he was here _________________ I'm a Bruins fan - don't try to confuse me with the facts |

Boyes got 33 and 34 tonight
Check the Marc Savard chat transcript, someone asked him who should get the 7th man, he said Wideman. I was his biggest detractor last year, he's completely converted me. Dude has a ton of game... |

I don't know whether that trade was necessarily good, as I don't really buy that you needed a top 4 d-man more than a 30+ goal scorer, but it wasn't necessarily bad. St. Louis is happy, and Boston shouldn't be unhappy with the deal. It's a win for St. Louis, a "not bad" for Boston, IMO. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. Auld is starting his second game in a row today after beating Washington yesterday. Is Timmay hurt or are they just giving Auld a few starts and giving Timmay some rest after his recent struggles? _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

There's no doubt that Boyes is a better player than Wideman, but I will concur with Razz that Wideman's actually a pretty good defenceman.
That being said, JD and the St. Loo brass are certainly not shedding any tears over that trade (or even checking the boxscores to see how Wideman is doing).
While the B's are well-served to have a good defenceman who can play with Chara, we'll see if the fact that they've allowed more goals than scored this season will bite them in the rear come playoff time. _________________ The Love Guru is a comedy like the Leafs are a hockey team. - G&M's Rick Groen

EL's assessment is fair.
No Chara or Ward today and we manage to hold the Rags to a goose egg thru 65 minutes...
Auld was 3-0-1 in his last 4 going into today.... Thomas has been violated more than Stinky lately... I'm afraid Thomas is out with the suck until Auld falters... |

Agreed also.
Another thing with Wideman is that he is playing this well and he's still only 24 years old... _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Sorry Bobby Orr, Brad Park and Ray Bourque. Dennis Wideman has now usurped all three of you as the greatest Bruins defenceman ever, possibly the greatest D-man of all time. And since we can argue that up until now Orr was the greatest player, Wideman is now the greatest player ever in NHL history! Gretzky who? |
