So this week is the round robin portion of our playoffs and with five teams in it we have four games between now and Friday we are center of the pack with a 3rd place finish for the regular season. Purely by chance and who was available to play on which night this week I will play the 1st and 2nd place team and the other goalie will take on the 4th and 5th. I've pretty much owned the first place team and been up and down against the second...should be interesting.

Most of the teams do that and myself I prefer it. With two games a week in this league and the majority of the league family aged guys it takes alot of the pressure of the commitment you get in net. Granted if it was a game a week league I'd not want to split. Plus, though I'm not one of them it gives the shift working goalies a nice league to play in.

2 Games a week? How many games a season? We play a 28 game season. 1 game a week.

I believe it is 35 games. With Three weeks off over X-mass and a few weekends lost due to Tournaments(we play Friday nights and Sunday late mornings) it cuts it down pretty good. It just gets weird come playoffs when guys start pushing for one goalie over another or some goalies want to split games, which I will not do. But keep in mind this is completely beer league and people take it pretty loosely....other than two or three freaks in the whole league who obviously didn't get the memo that no NHL scouts are coming to our games.

Played the second place team last night for the first round robin game and we had a 1-1 tie. We gave up the lead with around four minutes left, rebound of a tipped point shot got buried. We went on a power play with just over seven minutes left and that seems to be where the team lost focus. On that powerplay we gave up a full out break away a two on one and a partial break away, they didn't score but from that point on our quality D work was done for the night and we did well to sneak out with the tie. Oh and weird enough the guy that scored on me owns me, he scores more on me than anyone in the league by a long shot this season and though he is good every team has a couple of players in the line up better.
Oh got ran over pretty good by a pretty good buddy of mine and after the game having a beer he says to me yeah I ran you over hard but it's the Refs fault for not blowing the whistle sooner, if the whistle is not blown and the puck is under you I got to try and get it out. Ah man power forwards are like brainless excited Labradors some times...get the puck...get the puck...get the puck..

A tie in a playoff game? How does that work?

Playoffs are done tournament style so it's a round robin. Top two teams go to championship game and third and fourth consolation. Works well as they wait till all the kids are done for the year and allows them to have the rink to ourselves from Monday to Saturday to do the tourny for three leagues with a single sheet of ice. They have beer and food available in the hall attached to the rink and they film the games with cheesy commentary then play them back in the hall after to give us entertainment as we hang out after. This would likely be trouble waiting to happen if the general public was still in and out of the rink. It makes for a really fun week of hockey that I look forward to every year...only complaint is they film in 4:3 but playback on a widescreen so I look like my gear is the size of Giggy's.

Had a big game Sat night. We were in 1st by 1 point playing the 2nd place team in the final Reg game of the year. Winner takes #1. So we spanked them 7-1. We were all over them. We were even shorthanded the whoe second period killing two 5 on 3's and went into the 3rd with a 3 nill lead. Playoffs start Sunday. Round robin play.

The Barley Kings are Thursday night Champs!!!!! Huge win against the #1 team the Avs 5-3. ( We were the #2)

The whole team just grinned down and played a solid all around game Tim was incredible in nets for us. We had a 4-1 lead with about 3 and a half minutes to go and they got a real flukey one to pull within 2 and then scored with 12 seconds left to close it to one. But right of the draw our centerman got it to the winger who fired it into the empty net.

We will play the winner of tonights friday night championship next week in our final playoff game of the year!

Jeff, another solid game defensively! Very Happy

Thanks dude, you played well too. We had everyone there except Matt, so 3 full lines and 2 sets of D.

Fuck that 1st period was interesting. Some wierd bounces, some crazy bounces on Tim making saves. I had some bank passes that were just out of reach too. I thought it was going to go how it normally went against that team Confused

Funny, I thought the same same thing. Wwe went up 1-0 and then as you said, some passes just out of reach and bang, it was 1-1, and I too thought, oh no, not again. But the guys really dug deep,it was a great game.

Congrats, and good luck next round guys

We lost our first playoff game against the 8th seeded Rangers 5-2
(for some reason, we're going 1 vs.4, 5 vs. 8, etc.)

We had 6 skaters, but started out strong with intense backchecking and went out in front 1-0....that was pretty much our nut Laughing
After that, our top center was the only forward backchecking all night
There was one guy who I didn't see his skates move but once or twice all night
I know we only had 6, but FUCK!!!!! It's a playoff game
I'm talkin about gliding and watching a puck drift by, and lazily reaching for it
Fuck I was getting pissed
I'm not saying I was stellar, but I wasn't loafing
On several occasions, myself or the other D had to outwork 2 in the corner,
only to have a 3rd free guy get a point blank shot ( a few were goals )
Looking back, 2 guys were just clearing the OTHER team's zone Evil or Very Mad

Our goalie actually played spectacular for long stretches early to keep us in it, but it was inevitable. If you only have 6, all 6 have to be working hard or you're going to get beat.

I felt like screaming at one dude in particular, but he's a cool dude
I never hold a player's skill level against him, but effort has to be accountable ... however, this may be our last season as a team, and I didn't want to go out yelling at each other

That sucks Hip. I thought you guys had a decent team when you had 10 skaters. Have some guys just quit?

It seemed that you guys were constantly smoking your opponents earlier on.

Man I am stoked for tommorow's Championship game! Very Happy Keep in mind the guy I work with plays for the Rangers and even though he has been trying to trash talk me, he kind of admits it's going to be tough and he would be shocked if they beat us.

ASS KICKING TOMMOROW NIGHT!!!!!!!

Yes, they do have some good offence, but not great defence, so I'm hoping for the same result as the last 2 games we played them this year, a 7-3 win. Very Happy

We were smokin' teams earlier on, although the first 6 games or so were in the tiering round. We played tough against everyone though, so this collapse has me dumbfounded.

We've only had 8 skaters all season and the 8th guy probably hasn't played 10 games. We're usually good to go with 7, but over a whole season....
It means our top center has played D a lot, and eventually the other top forward(s) start getting frustrated. Our top LW has missed the past 2 games, and I have my doubts he'll be back this week. He has been our best player all season (even though the center is certainly our best player in terms of skill)
I think you could count the times he's turned over the puck this season on one hand. I say LW, even though obviously he's played everywhere this season Laughing
I think not having lines eventually catches up with you

Anyways, good luck tomorrow night!
