Simmons clearly didn't get that tidbit from Gainey, but I'm hardly surprised rumours are leaking from Toronto management left and right.
I agree that the Philly deal would have wreaked havoc on their chances to retain a full roster in 2008-09.
The Flyers have 49M committed for next season. We'll assume they have about 7-8M more to spend on Umberger, Carter, Jones and pluggers.
Rathje will be off the books by then, if he isn't already. Ditto Primeau and Gauthier. Trade Biron and Lupul. Maybe Gagne can't come back. This team has flexibility, not much. but if the opportunity existed to pick up TKab, I could see them biting today and worrying about tomorrow later.
Consider that at this point TKab might have ended up being the difference in making the playoffs - the Flyers are tanking spectacularly.
It was pointed in this thread that although a roster purge was necessary in Toronto, Mats deserved respect for being such a loyal foot solider. Sadly life doesn't work that way and trading Sundin was the only to kick start the rebuilding process (a Sundin trade would have been a sign to the NMC players that it was time to get out of dodge).
And if Mats retires after this season, that's even worse. A non-playoff team will lose its best player and replace him with nothing. It took over a decade for the Habs to get out of the post-Roy doldrums. _________________ John McCain is fit as a fiddle… Is 71 the new 30?” - Fox News' Rich Lowry

At 49 million next season, Rathje is still on the books for 3.5 million for the next 2 seasons. Gauthier is on for 2.1 next season. I'm guessing that even though they are on LTIR and in the minors respectively now, they're still counted towards Philly's cap count for next season at 49 million. So add in TKabs salary to that, they have to get back down to 50.3 million. Jeff Carter is RFA so not on the books. So to add TKab at the deadline they would have had to have cleared 3+ million in salary for next season. Hatcher, Gauthier, Knuble, Lupul? They'd have to worry about tomorrow now, not later, like Anaheim did with Niedermayer. And they wouldn't have much of a time luxury.
On nhlnumbers, they say that they're at 53.525 with bonus cushion. I have no idea how that is because I don't see bonus numbers anywhere that come close to adding up to that, but in that case he would have fit under that amount. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!
