I'm still not liking our chances...in a league dictated by special teams the Avs have some of the worst in the league. Even with injuries decimating the lineup that's entirely inexcusable. Granato's dumb ass better be fired with all due haste this offseason, regardless of the outcome. It's his JOB to make sure the PK and PP work, and during his time as head coach it actually did, at least the power play that is. |

Oh heavens no...I'm just saying that was the ONE thing he did right after taking over for Hartley. And now he's not even doing that as an assistant, so I say we jettison him with all due haste. I'm sure he'll land on his feet somewhere in San Jose or L.A. |

No clinches or eliminations tonight, as New Jersey and Anaheim lost, and Toronto won.
Buffalo falls behind Washington, but Philly wins, inching closer. Every team from 7th place Philly to 12th place Toronto have games in hand on Washington, so while they sit only one back of Boston for 8th, Boston does have 2 more games to play than the Caps, and 1 more than the Sabres.
10 games tomorrow. I'll summarize...
Colorado v Edmonton - with an adjusted point total of 92 or 93, Edmonton is still technically in the race in the West, but a loss to Colorado would definitely be game over. Colorado can make things a lot easier on themselves by winning.
Chicago v Nashville - Nashville needs a near perfect end to the year to likely make it, so they'll have to get a win here to start. Chicago, with the adjusted point total, is in the same boat.
LA v Dallas - LA's long gone, Dallas is closing in on an eventual clinch. Nothing much to watch here unless you're wondering if Dallas will be able to catch Anaheim for 2nd in the Pacific and home ice in that 4 v 5 playoff matchup.
Boston v Montreal - Montreal's in, but battling for their division and the conference lead. Boston's slipped to 8th and is suddenly vulnerable. Philly, Buffalo, and Washington aren't playing, so this is one of those "games in hand" on those teams.
Toronto v Ottawa - Ottawa needs a win to keep pace for the division/conference race, as they're running 4th right now in that one, which is only good for the 5th seed. Toronto continues to need to run the table, so is this the night they fall?
Tampa Bay v Florida - Florida also needs a virtual sweep of their remaining schedule to make it, and their cross-state rival should be a good chance to get closer to that improbable goal.
Detroit v Columbus - Nothing much to watch here, but a loss by Columbus puts them out of reach of even the new adjusted total of 92 points.
New Jersey v Pittsburgh - Battle for 1st place in the Atlantic and the Eastern Conference as well. Montreal and Ottawa just hopes this one doesn't go to OT. If this game goes to OT, both teams clinch. If not, only the winner will clinch. But there will be at least 2 Eastern Conference teams past 92 points by the end of Saturday.
Anaheim v Phoenix - If the new adjusted total is 92 points, this is Phoenix's new last stand. Anaheim needs a win to make 94 points. Take your pick on the standard... it's pretty obvious where these teams will finish in the end anyways.
Minnesota v Calgary - Another game of the night potential (I'd say this and the NJ/Pitt game are the two leading candidates). Both teams should be able to accumulate 94 points, let alone 92 or 93 or wherever the bar really should be in the West. This game is for 1st in the NW and coveted home ice in a likely head to head matchup (although far from certain).

Uh oh for Colorado... that was a ridiculous game. Hemsky just owned the Avalanche, but the Oil almost blew it in the 3rd giving up 4 goals. The game ends with a somewhat bizarre ending... a hooking call on a partial break for Reasoner, in which he fired wide of the open net. The ref called it a penalty shot and automatic goal to make it 7-5. I think it was a gutsy call, but ultimately the correct one despite the weird angle of the "breakaway".

Yes, but with a game in hand. If they win in regulation, they're one point back and largely in control of the race to the finish.

Florida and Toronto hold on, while Columbus and Phoenix are most definitely OUT. Nashville and Edmonton hold serve in the West's new goal of 92 points.... which means Chicago is still in it despite their shootout loss. They can still get 92 points.
In the East, I'm not adjusting down at the moment, 92 is still the goal. So Pittsburgh becomes team #2 to clinch a spot in their decisive win over New Jersey.
Meanwhile, Anaheim officially moves to team #3 to clinch, although I guess with an adjusted total they already had clinched. This can be confusing.

It show's the likelihood each team has of finishing in the playoffs, and each position, in a simulation mode using 100,000,000 different results. For example, in 100 million simulations, although the Blues remain mathematically alive to make the playoffs, only 14 different scenarios emerged in which they actually made it. The Blackhawks' win last night increased their chances of making the playoffs by 2.3%, and moves them up to 5.7% overall. Philly jumped 11.1% to 82.6% with their win, and mathematically eliminated the Islanders. The Capitals, as another example, had their chances drop by 3%.

Lots to digest here. NJ fails to clinch AGAIN, but Ottawa moves within 1 point of clinching. Toronto and Florida are OUT. The Rangers and Hurricanes get a point closer, but Philly and Washington get two much needed ones. Buffalo's loss puts them on the verge of elimination... a regulation loss and it's over.
In the West, Nashville stays very much alive. And the Flames just came back in the 3rd to beat the Canucks in regulation, moving within 2 points of clinching... and ahead of Dallas. This is the first Canucks regulation loss when leading after 2 periods.
