I know I've already said that we've essentially clinched a playoff spot, but the official clinch is just 2 points away.

Buffalo can still reach 95 points. We have 94. Any combination of us gaining 2 points or Buffalo losing 2 points puts us in the post-season.

For the division crown, the magic number is 8. Ottawa can reach 101 points. Any win by us and loss by them knocks 2 points off the number. If we can beat them on Monday, the magic number is down to 4. If they beat us, it stays at 8. If we beat them in OT/SO, it drops to 5. If they beat us in OT/SO, it drops to 7.

There is no magic number for the conference title... if the Penguins run the table, they'd jump ahead of us in the standings even if we ran the table as well. If we ever get to the point of a magic number for the conference title, I'll post it here.

Whoops, already an update. This is why I should do my own research and not rely on others. I stole the "8" from Habsworld's main page, but they had it wrong.

The actual number is 10. Ottawa has 89 points, and 7 games left, and can get 103 points. Montreal has 94 points, so 10 points is the difference.

If Montreal wins tonight in regulation, the magic number is 6.

If Montreal wins tonight in OT/SO, the magic number is 7.

If Montreal loses tonight in OT/SO, the magic number is 9.

If Montreal loses tonight in regulation, the magic number is still 10.

So delay those parade plans for a second.

And according to this probability website, we have an 81% chance of winning the division heading into Game 77:

http://www.sportsclubstats.com/NHL/Eastern.html

That website also breaks down probable finishes for each team based on all possible finishes for the remainder of the season, and how the results of tonight's games could affect our probable finish:

The Habs officially clinch a playoff spot with that ugly 7-5 win.

Magic Number for winning the Northeast: SIX.

Magic Number for winning the Conference: Ten. Yes, 5-0-0 is what is required to guarantee it, but we are in control of our own destiny.

Ottawa loses in OT, so Montreal's magic number is now FIVE to win the division.

Pittsburgh won, and overtook us for the conference lead, but we still maintain the magic number of 10 for the #1 seed.

And DOWN THEY GO!

For the division: THREE.

For the Conference: Eight (still need perfection).

Ottawa loses in regulation to Boston, which means....

Entering tonight's game vs. Toronto, Montreal's magic number for the division title...

is ONE.

Well, with Pittsburgh getting 3 out of 4 points with the Rangers, and our loss to Toronto, we no longer have a magic number for the conference.... Pittsburgh's magic number is 4 against us to clinch 1st. They have two games to play. Even if we win tomorrow, we can't grab that back until they lose.

Our magic number remains one vs. Ottawa obviously, heading into the head to head matchup tomorrow night. We'd have to go 0-3-0 this week and Ottawa would have to go 3-0-0 for us to not win the division... those aren't good odds for Ottawa, that's for sure, but they're too good of odds if you ask me.

And... there are no magic numbers currently. Which is a good thing in one sense, but we still aren't in control of 1st place in the East. We're at least #2, though. Very Happy

Our Magic Numbers:

4 - to beat Boston
16 - to win the Stanley Cup

Although I'm sure you didn't need those explained to you. Smile
