We all thought it'd be the #3 seed or bust, but Carolina's hot streak and Philly's cold streak has made it much more probable that if Washington were to make the playoffs... they'll make it as the #8 seed and there'd be 2 SE teams in the playoffs instead of the token one. They're at 78 points with 9 to play. Buffalo has 79, and Philly has 80, both with 9 to play. With the final 7 to 9 games being exclusively played within your own division, Washington has by default the easiest schedule. They must go on the road to play two non-playoff positioned Western teams in Nashville and Chicago before closing out their schedule with 7 games against Southeast teams. How good are there chances? Well, no "4 point games" unless you count the Carolina or Florida games. Ovechkin cracked 100 points last night with a 1 goal, 2 assist performance against Nashville, as the Caps hung on for a 4-2 road win. The win had them keep pace with Philly who won last night by the skin of their teeth... a massive, last second save by Niittymaki on a Kovalchuk one-timer right in the slot preserved the 3-2 win for the Flyers. Kovalchuk had just scored 30 seconds earlier to bring the game within 1, as well, so it could've been an epic collapse. Huge win! The Caps beat the Lightning 4-3 in OT thanks to Tomas Flieschmann of all people. And they won despite the fact that Ovechkin didn't register a single point. Did Boudreau just call a stick measurement on Cory Larose? Looks like Washington had a PP, Semin took a hooking penalty, but Larose also got a penalty for "illegal equipment".
