McCarty out, Downey in.

Didn't see it but Nichol got called for diving. It's Nichol so it was probably well-deserved. Fuck I hate him and Tootoo, but at least Hartnell, who has no idea how to throw a legal, safe hit, is gone.
Detroit could do Van's playoff hopes a favour winning this game, but I don't like the idea of Bobby Lou in the first round no matter how he's playing right now. That and the travel would be a whore.

Zetterberg almost scores a shorthander, but Zanon makes an excellent play to box him out so he can't tap it in, and Ellis falls back on it

Kronwall runs over Radulov at his own blue line and then Chelly gets high-sticked for a 4-minute PP. Time to get a goal boys!
Kronwall loves to run over guys taking outlet passes at their own blue line, and when he's doing it he nearly always fully connects.
Great. Franzen takes a tripping penalty right in front of the friggin Nashville net. Cancels the rest of the double-minor.

MULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy crap is this guy ever hot! Gets his 14th in the past 13 games, all in March. Zetterberg send it to the net, Franzen hits the rebound and it takes a couple of bounces and goes in. Franzen has 6 of the past 12 game winners. Ellis played extremely well but loses his shutout streak in overtime.
Friggin Hasek(I think that's my new nickname for him) gets his 5th shutout of the season and the 81st of his career. He didn't screw up playing the puck too much and played a very good game. Hopefully this is an indication that he's back on track.
Nice to see the Wings pull out the win tonight because of the Howe celebration.

The best part is that it was a 3 point game. Nashville gets a point and has a game in hand on Edmonton and Detroit get 2 points and now has a magic number of 1 to clinch top spot in the league and maybe rest some guys / prevent injuries against Chicago and Columbus in our last 3 games. Come on Phoenix beat San Jose tonight!!!

Agreed. I don't foresee the contests against Chicago and Columbus being really dirty ones either. At least I hope they won't be
Oh yeah the PK was dynamite today. We can't take penalties like this in the playoffs though.

It was a playoff intense game. Both teams were running each other pretty well. I really liked our energy. Drake and Kronwall's hits matched Nashville's intensity. I thought Downey and Tootoo were going to drop the gloves at some point. The nice thing is that our PK looks ready for the playoffs. I am really glad Cleary is back and Drake is getting healthy. Those guys along with the usual suspects are playing at the top of their games. Interesting note Datsyuk passed Nick Lidstrom in +/- at 41 for best in the NHL. I'm smelling a possible Selke candidate to go along with the expected skirt award (Byng). To win those two awards in the same year and finish 3rd in scoring is really quite amazing.

Yup. For a long time, Zetterberg was the Wings forward who was getting all of the attention for the Selke. Well, when he was hurt, Datsyuk really started to get noticed for his play without the puck. He isn't going to bury you in the corners, but he's so effective in the defensive zone and he's amazing at getting the puck back in the neutral and offensive zones. This may be a result of just being able to watch more Wings games, but I've noticed that he is also finishing his checks a lot of the time when he has the opportunity instead of simply turning away. His play along the boards and in the corners has also improved because he is getting better at establishing physical position on bigger D and then using his amazing stick skills and shiftiness to come out with the puck.
What's even more amazing about Datsyuk's +/- is that Babcock continues to throw he and Zetterberg out there against the opposition's best. Datsyuk is only behind Zetterberg and Lidstrom on Detroit in terms of quality of competition and is up there among the league leaders in going against the best that the opposition has to offer.

I'm just saying... it's hard to call someone the best defensive forward in the NHL when Mike Ribeiro would also look responsible in the same position.

It would only seem to make sense that in order for Datsyuk to pass the future Hall of Famer in +/- that he would have to be on the ice at differant times than Lidstrom. Thus making a nice case for the best defensive forward. Datsyuk at the very least should be, at a bare minimum, seriously considered for a Selke nomination. If you have not seen him play much you are missing a rare treat. He is a very special two way player. He leads the NHL in steals. He is truly as spectacular a defensive player as he is an offensive threat. It's too bad he's rather overlooked due to media attention being focused on Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin. No slight to them but Datsyuk ranks right up there with all of them. This guy is the complete package.

Having a better +/-... if that was the only barometer that mattered than Wideman's a better d-man than Chara and razz is right about everything. 
The guys that usually deserve this award don't win, my shortlist would include Mike Grier (probably my fav for this year), Rob Niedermeyer (helped because of Anaheim, although his indicators hold up even when they weren't good and he played with two different centres and still excelled), Jay Pandolfo (always a good choice), Trent Hunter (long shot), Mike Richards and then maybe I'd look at a guy like Datsyuk. But I think Grier would be my choice but he'll never win. I do have a thing for defensive forwards that are also aggressive and take matters into their own hands. Guess it's from watching guys like Carbonneau and Skrudland so much as a kid.
Lehtinen's still the best, though. Too bad he got hurt.
I was looking at those PK numbers from Behind the Net and Zubov's are just incredible.
Datsyuk is 7th amongst Detroit forwards in SH icetime... how has he shown he's the best defensive forward in the NHL?
