Well, did you ever believe ownership was ever for real about a true rebuilding movement?
I dunno, what can ya do here if you're "Cliffy?" Ownership and previous inept management pretty much has his hands tied. The best you can do I suppose is to sign Sundin to a 1-year deal and do your damndest to move the players you CAN move (i.e., Kubina).
At the very least there are at least a couple playmaking wingers (Samsonov, Prospal) on the FA market who at least won't break the bank and might actually get the most out of whatever's left in Sundin's tank.
Someone I think mentioned it before but it's really sad that Sundin has effectively become the Moose of the Maple Leafs. They can't really make that necessary next step until he's gone. |

Kubina's been playing well, so they'll keep him.
Citing injuries as the main reason for failing this season, the Leafs will spend up to the cap and deal their useless no. 9-10 overall pick for a scoring forward. They shall go for eighth yet again.
Very few owners, fans, organizations, players, coaches, managers have the stomach for a true rebuild. The Leafs and their fans most certainly do not, despite what they might tell you. The bottom hasn't even come close to dropping out. Leafs fans will forgive and forget this season, and pray signing Michael Ryder and Sergei Fedorov will make them contenders in 08-09. _________________ John McCain is fit as a fiddle… Is 71 the new 30?” - Fox News' Rich Lowry

But Fedorov's track record is so good...
P.S. Emery to Toronto July 1, it's an R2D2 on the Eklund equivalency scale... |

Getting Sundin back, as long as it's at a reasonable rate, is not a bad idea. The guy is FAR and away their best forward and the only one who can score on a consistent basis. Really, for Toronto, there isn't a better option out there via UFA or trade. And just not re-signing him isn't going to do much for their rebuild.

Oh, thank God, E.L. I was just about throwing up seeing Jack Todd's face where Rachel Bilson in a bikini was supposed to be. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I'll ask you then, if you had to choose right now:
1. Re-sign Sundin, bring in another player, hope everyone stays healthy and make a run for the playoffs in 08-09
2. Don't bring back Sundin, deal everyone, amass assets, finish in the bottom 5 the next 3 seasons
Which would you choose?

I'd go with the impossible option three and sign Sundin with out a no trade then put a crappy team around him and then trade his ass at the deadline.
But of the two realistic options you gave clearly two. With the current contracts and lack of high end youth a cup run is impossible and just making the playoffs is of little use to a 25 year Leaf fan like myself. _________________ psssssssssssssshhh....bing bong ping bong bing bong...pssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. |

So much for the youth movement. They STILL don't get it, lol...
 |
What youth are they going to be able to sign? He is arguably the best UFA this season ... not to mention he has played w- the Leafs since '95

Feborov is Fedorov. Sundin is Sundin. I don't see the correlation?

You can't bring back Sundin and deal everyone else.
The NMC clause players will want to stick around.
You risk not finishing in the bottom-5 and getting good young players.
Sundin still holds too much clout with management and the locker room - the future young stars won't have a chance to prove themselves without hiding behind their captain.
It sends a mixed message to fans.
I can't think of a precedent case, where the aging star player stuck around while the team underwent a successful rebuilding process. _________________ John McCain is fit as a fiddle… Is 71 the new 30?” - Fox News' Rich Lowry

Brent Favre is the only one I can think of. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

I'd also rather finish 7-8 with sundin than 9-10 without.
In case with Fletcher that is the two choices. _________________ psssssssssssssshhh....bing bong ping bong bing bong...pssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. |

It's times like this Toronto wishes it had Burke. He has the personality forceful enough to get idiots like Peddie out of the way and make life miserable for the NMC guys who won't waive. He also has enough savvy to find GM's dumb enough to take on whatever bad contracts he has on the books (like Doug MacLean) and even get a sizeable return.
At present, "Cliffy" won't be able to do either of those things, so I don't see the rebuild happening until these horrid contracts expire, ergo there's no harm in re-signing Mats to a 1-year deal.
Right now the "young core" of this team is pretty blah...I see Jiri "TMI" Tlusty, Kyle Wellwood, Ragin' Stajan, Alex Steen, and Carlo Concussionaivo. Maybe one more year of mediocrity will yield one more decent prospect to build around so that when/if the rebuild actually does happen, they won't be embarrassingly bad, merely Phoenix Coyotes bad. |
