My evaluation of the 'Canes in the off-season was that they could be contenders again if Cam Ward and Eric Staal re-discovered their 2006 Cup-winning form. So far, so good as Staal has five goals in six games and a leaner Ward has a 1.79 goals against average and .942 save percentage in his first five starts.
