Another kid getting a game or two with the Wings because of the injuries to our forward ranks. We recently signed him out of College after his third season.
| Quote: |
The Red Wings have signed Michigan State junior forward Justin Abdelkader to an amateur tryout and he’s expected to make his NHL debut tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Joe Louis Arena.
Abdelkader, a former Mr. Hockey from Muskegon, scored the winning goal with 18.9 seconds as a junior to help Michigan State win the 2007 NCAA title. He was named most outstanding player of the Frozen Four.
He scored 19 goals and 21 assists this season and finished his college career with 44 goals, 51 assists and 95 points in 124 games.
The Wings selected Abdelkader, 6-2, 203 pounds, 42nd overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. |

Make sure to get that final clinching point tonight against Columbus so you don't feel you have to spoil things for the Blackhawks on Saturday! _________________ It's backwards time. |

If they lose that game while I'm there I'm holding you personally responsible and will pay Scott to give you an atomic wedgie and take a picture next time he's out there. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Tell you what, we'll make it ultra-dramatic as well. The Hawks can win it in a shootout, OK? _________________ It's backwards time. |

It's all moot now.
Bosc, Can I still give Sask an atomic wedgie? _________________

Give him two.
Well, Wings had plenty of great chances throughout the whole game but Leclaire played a great game. We were able to come back and win it in the closing seconds. His lateral movement and lateral recovery was fantastic. He made a bunch of great butterfly slides for saves on rebounds. Might want to get those rebounds under control though Detroit hit iron a bunch of times.
Both Columbus goals looked like screen shots. If they weren't, they were shitty goals by Dom Detroit's first two were rebounds, one by Hartigan and one by who else? Franzen. Leclaire was shaky playing the puck in the last few minutes, and Detroit won the game by dumping it in right beside him, he misplayed it, tried to get back in the net and Zetterberg banked it off of his legs and in for the winner.
Plenty of good hits in this game. Kopecky and Kronwall had a couple of big hits on Boll in a short span of time. Abdelkader looks pretty good out there, very good skater, good size, likes the physical game, and Babcock had him out there late in the game, showing confidence in his game. Get this kid's signature on a contract!
Datsyuk with two more assists. Hopefully those pricks from Chicago come in on Sunday and let Detroit roll over them. I want Pavel to get his first 100 point season. Filppula's 20th goal would also be nice. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Doesn't he have to be already signed to a contract to play in the NHL? _________________ It's backwards time. |

Sounds like a fancy word for "cap circumvention". _________________ It's backwards time. |

Would be if Detroit didn't have any cap space Not sure how it works, but the cap space doesn't make any difference because we've got well over a mil left and that's including $2.3 mil in bonuses to Hasek and Chelly.
Junior players don't have to be under contract to have their 10-gamer at the beginning of the season, do they?
If they want Abdelkader for the playoffs, he definitely has to have an entry-level contract. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Junior players do have to be signed or else returned... their amateur tryout ends when training camp is over.
Maybe when they don't have any more commitment to their team they can sign one of these and play in the NHL... I knew they could play in the AHL on one of these contracts, but I didn't realize the NHL still allowed it. It definitely sounds like it could be exploited for cap circumvention, whether it is for Detroit or not currently I guess isn't the point (unless it's to circumvent the callup rule). _________________ It's backwards time. |

He played the gamre as an amatuer. He was an American College player with Michigan State until last week. The cap isn't an issue although Detroit has roughly 5.0 million in cap space.

Yup, in that article it says you're allowed to play one NHL game as an amateur without a contract.
| Quote: |
| "We're not quite done on the contract, but we're very close," Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "And he's comfortable enough to come in and play (without a signed contract). Under the CBA, an amateur can play one game with no salary. So he's playing for the love of the game tonight." |
I'm guessing that's what happened with that UBC dude too(Levesque? Unless it was different under the old CBA, if it was the old CBA.) _________________ Bring back the old OTP!
