Surprisingly, unlike the last two playoffs, I actually feel decisive about a couple of these. The standings are pretty even, yet there are teams that seem to 'have' it and a few who don't going in.
Original Six Grudge Match
Razz's auto-bravado, which has already started (despite a role reversal from recent history), is what's going to make yet another MTL-BOS playoff series amusing.
Montreal in 6
Jyrki21 vs. Jyrki21's Cousin Machamachamacha
When the Sens and Pens met in last year's playoffs, my cousin in Pittsburgh and I didn't even take note of the "natural rivalry" until halfway through it, as we're both Canuck fans and weren't really paying attention. The Sens are better than they've been playing, but Pittsburgh is ready to take the next step.
Pittsburgh in 6
Battle of the Rebuilds
Washington's has been a long time coming, Philadelphia's was lightning-fast. The Caps are in the position the Canucks were last year -- a non-playoff team halfway through the season, on a tear down the stretch to be one of the more trepidation-instilling teams to face in the first round. So I'll go for a similar result to the VAN/DAL series last year.
Washington in 7
The series that would be the subway series if NHLers took public transit and the state of New Jersey had any to speak of
The rule that Tommyboy has reiterated season after season holds here: never bet against the Devils.
New Jersey in 6
Motor City vs. Music City
I remember this matchup from a few years ago. Yeah, same result -- the Wings are even better this time around. Nashville's been on a good run, but they'll be overmatched.
Detroit in 5
Whoooooaaaaa this Shark's on Fiiiiire
"Right from the start, it's been burning for you," San Jose. I have to take this from the perspective of a Canuck fan. The Sharks scare the bejeezus out of me. The Flames don't, and seem the least built for the playoffs.
San Jose in 5
2003 Role Reversal
Again, from a Canuck fan perspective, this is the unstoppable force against the immovable object, except that the Canucks actually had decent success against the Wild this year. Normally, Minnesota's one of the teams I won't bet against. However, Tommyboy's Devil rule applies to Colorado for me, since the franchise long ago sold its soul to Satan, who has proudly worn that now-awkwardly-designed jersey since the NHL started in 1995. If Andrew Brunette scores a 7th-game OT winner, the irony will be too good.
Colorado in 7
2003 Role Reversal, part II
Anaheim may very well have won the President's Trophy with this lineup all year, and the Stars have been faltering mightily since the trade deadline.
Anaheim in 5 _________________

That's right, it's totally personal. It has nothing to do with that 8-0 regular season record. _________________

EAST
Bruins over Habs in 6......The B's have heart this year.
Pittsburgh in 4 over Ottawa.....The Sens have no heart and Gary Roberts loves to kill the Sens
WSH in 5 over PHI....Ovechkin cannot be stopped.....its another cup for the SE.
NYR in 7 over the NJD...probably the only matchup I don't really give a shit about in the 1st Round.
WEST
DET wastes NSH in 4....Dan Ellis is going to have to do it all for the Preds to even win 1 game.
Flames in 6 over the Sharks.....Sharks continue to demonstrate their futility at the playoffs. The Right Flames show up and play sound hockey.
AVS in 5 over the Wild...believe it or not this Avs team is completely different with Forsberg, Foote and Salei. Theodore has been good. This is the team to watch in the West. Minny is Jacques hockey that this group has seen before.
Ducks in 6 over the Stars.....I personally don't give a shit about this matchup either....I don't like the Ducks and am only midly interested in watching Turco choke again. _________________ -UP THE IRONS! |
