Not many are talking about this matchup, but it's got high profile players and top notch goaltending. Brodeur has been dissing Lundqvist in the press (if SI counts as hockey press anymore), saying he doesn't like his goaltending style. They've been playing head games for weeks with each other and Sutter's been playing head games with his own team to try and get them going as well. Jagr's a head game all to himself, and that may be the difference maker here... Jagr's inability (or unwillingness) to mesh with Gomez or Drury has the 3 stars spread over 3 different lines, providing a balanced puck possession game, even if it isn't a dynamic offence.
And I haven't even mentioned Sean Avery yet.
For the Devils, it's a matter of getting the veteran scorers going, particularily Elias. Without Gomez, he's had a sub-par year. Gionta has found ways to score even playing on the RW of the famous checking duo of Pandolfo-Madden. Offensively, this is Parise's team by a long shot, and they'll need guys like Langenbrunner and Zubrus to step up with some big goals as well.
Both teams have largely no-name defenses, with the Rangers probably having the better crew anchored by Roszival.
The Devils have kind of had a rebuilding year, or at least as close to rebuilding as they get, trying to establish a good forecheck and be more aggressive. They've had trying moments this season, but they still came out with home ice in the first round, and Brodeur is still going to win the Vezina this year. But the Rangers won the season series quite decisively, by winning close games. We'll see if their much publicized off-season acquisitions pay off in the post-season, where their reputations have been made. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. This series is good for the NHL. It gets New Yorkers relatively excited about hockey, and the Rags/Devs will likely play this one dirty.
I'm expecting an epic Avery/Clarkson showdown.
I'm also expecting the best goaltending of any series.
Low scoring, lots of hitting - should make for some older-style hockey. _________________ John McCain is fit as a fiddle… Is 71 the new 30?” - Fox News' Rich Lowry

It's tough to get a read on this series, particularly for a Western Conference fan. I do believe in the rule established by the e-late Tommyboy, though, of never counting the Devils out.
I hope there's at least a bit of scoring -- I ended up taking a bit of a risk and taking Elias with my final pick in the office pool. _________________

Low scoring should be the norm for sure.
I imagine that the goaltending will be good on Jersey's side for sure, but I don't know how much of a challenge Jersey will pose for Henny Lundqvist, though he'll still be great of course. Jersey was 25th in goals scored, and only Anaheim scored fewer among all playoff teams. Although the Rags weren't much better. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Like J21, I have some trouble reading this one, but I'll go with the Tommyboy rule, and stick with Brodeur and the Devils. Should be an interesting one to follow for sure. _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

Well, if there was ever a time when Chris Drury actually shows up and earns his paycheck, it's now.
I think it'll come down to the goaltenders...and whether or not Jagr has one last playoff run in the tank. |

Wrong again, Av! It's all about Scotty Gomez haunting his former team. What a performance!

Fuck, could the refs have wanted to give that game to the Rangers any more? Brutal calls in the final minute, and usually it's Jersey getting away with the calls.

Yeah the Devs announcers were crying about a fairly weak cross check on Parise. Not like it mattered anyway. _________________ -UP THE IRONS! |

They called a hook on Langenbrunner on a very mild pick play in the final minute. It was pretty weak considering they never call those plays even during the first month of the season. Then Callahan hooked Martin who ended up icing it. They got the icing overruled, but no penalty was called on the play. Sutter threw a stick on the ice in protest.

I could live with Avery's behavior in front of Brodeur with one condition...that is nulls the instigator call.
On that note wonder what the over under in minutes is for when some Yahoo starts waiving his stick in front of my face tomorrow at Hockey? _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

Wow...I really wish someone would just give him the beating he deserves.
Rags can't boot this idiot off the team fast enough. |

As a Rag he's really been very effective though. Winning in pro sports out weights embarrassment. _________________ It's not you Sundin, it's me...please just leave...and don't look back....please please do not look back. |

No I realize how good he's been for them and how integral he's been to their success (which makes it all the more disgusting)...but to that I have to say that if your fortunes are tied that much to a waste of skin like that, then there's something seriously, seriously wrong with your organization.
After the very acrimonious arbitration hearing Avery and the Rags had this offseason I'd be beyond shocked if he re-signed. I wouldn't put it past Slats to make an offer, but I'd think he'd want to get as far away from New York and whatever "little black books" he's listed in as soon as the season ends... |

Oh my god Sloth.
My oh-so-wise son Josh and I were talking about this exact thing last night - and he said a new penalty called "The Avery" should be implemented - and it means "unsportsmanlike" and general "douchebaggery"

Cherry versus Roenick on Avery
... and the winner is... CHERRY!
"I think he wants to win," San Jose Sharks forward Jeremy Roenick told THE CANADIAN PRESS. "Sometimes he looks like an idiot and it may look bad, but it's probably effective. The kid is a competitor. He has a difficult job, but he's just trying to win night in and night out and that's what is the most important thing."
Outspoken telivision personality Don Cherry disagreed.
"I've known this kid since he was about 16 years old," Cherry told Toronto radio station The FAN 590. "Once a jerk, always a jerk. You can't blame the referee, because . he couldn't believe what he was seeing. Could you believe what you were seeing? I've never seen anything like that and I've been in every league that's ever existed." |

Didn't see the game (thanks Versus I really wanted to see the Nashville Predators instead ) but looks like another solid performance by Gomez (2 goals, the first and the last, albeit the 2nd one was an empty-netter). Drury with two points, and hey lookee there! Marc Staal with the game-winner!!!
Best news of all...Dumbass Avery didn't notch so much as a single point. Shockingly enough I don't think he got a penalty either, though I doubt he wasn't deserving of one.

Gomez did SO much on that EN goal...
Madden won the faceoff at centre ice cleanly.... past Elias and straight back into the empty net.
Easiest goal Gomez will ever score. Really, they should've done the old "which Ranger last touched the puck" rule and found someone that actually touched the puck on a previous play.
I wonder if Madden got credited with winning the faceoff. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."
