You know, I like San Jose as a team. One of these years, you'd think they'd win it all with the talent they have. But it won't be this year, even with all the experts on their bandwagon.
There is no way this team survives a physical battle with Calgary, then another one with either Anaheim or Minnesota, and then beat Detroit as well to make it to the Final. Their only hope is a Nashville upset of Detroit if you ask me, to survive the West. And even then, it won't be easy.
If they play Anaheim in Round 2, the "Nothing Line" is going to completely eliminate Joe Thornton, Brian Campbell and the San Jose attack. It's just not a good matchup for them... despite their depth, they are still too reliant on that one guy to get their offence going.
Last year, I thought coaching did them in vs. Detroit. This year, I don't even think that'll be a huge factor. _________________ It's backwards time. |

Yes, there is still something missing from this squad...I agree they just don't have enough to really push through all obstacles.
I see the same pattern emerging...Marleau is his usual stellar self in the first round before disappearing entirely, Thornton with a few but not nearly enough sparks of brilliance. The X Factor will be Brian Campbell of course, giving the opposing PK something new to focus on. |

Ya for sure it will be tough to get through Calgary and then Anaheim if it works out that way. If they make it the things I can see making a positive difference this year vs. Detroit:
Campbell is a huge improvement for puck moving D
healthy Cheechoo (remember Nashville douche took out his knee last year)
no useless Guerin = addition by subtraction
Nabokov has gone from good goalie to elite IMO
overall a much better team defensively
But even with this, Detroit is so good. For SJ to win they will need the 2nd line (probably Marleau-Pavelski-Clowe but who knows with RW) to really step up big time. I think Clowe can be a real difference maker. |
