Sources say former player agent Brian Lawton, who quit the agent business last year to focus on getting a job in hockey management, is said to be extremely well thought of by the Canucks' hierarchy. Whether Lawton, a former NHL player who was chosen No. 1 overall in the 1983 Entry Draft, is a leading candidate or just one of the candidates remains to be seen, but it's clearly a name that should not be ignored. |
If Lawton gets the job firing Nonis makes little sense.
Why go on & on about leadership & exp , then hire a guy without exp? _________________ Mark my words Nonis is a mediocre GM-

And moreover, here's another wrinkle:

Now I love Gino as much as the next guy, but if he's anywhere near a decision-making role with the Vancouver Canucks, it can't be good. _________________

The more I read the more worried I get
http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/darren_dreger/?id=234470
What kind of message does this send to anyone thinking about taking the job now? How can it be inferred that he didn't have a plan when he was clearly trying to stick to a plan and wasn't willing to mortgage the future for short term benefits? |

| Seriously, if that offer was turned down by TB in favor of Mike Smith and Jeff fucking Halpern, then essentially it was Jay Feaster's incompetence that got Nonis fired. |

WRT to giving DN authority to spend to the cap, if Aquilini thinks $$$ = success in the NHL, then he's going to have to learn some very expensive lessons over the next few years... I wouldn't be surprised if he chases UFAs like Hossa with cash only to see him perform marginally better than Naslund.
Given that his panic move seemed to be driven by a group of disgruntled and frustrated fans, I hope he's seeing how much bad press he's getting about this move and what it's ramifications are... Whoever he hires next will determine whether this team survives this setback (say, by hiring a Ken Holland or Scotty Bowman) or whether he'll serve up the next punchline in a long, protracted downward spiral of the league's latest laughing stock... Move over, New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning... There's a new joke in town. Their Aquilini's Vancouver Canucks... Seeing as how I just can't see the Wings release Holland, or Scotty Bowman get talked out of retirement to come to the Wet Coast, I'm getting a very, very bad feeling about this. _________________ ... | Well, from there the Aquilinis, who want to win, promptly make another change and the Vancouver hockey fan suffers through three or four years of anguish. But in the bargain, they will get some very high draft picks for the first time since the team took Trevor Linden and that's how so many of these emerging teams, which also include Washington and soon the L.A. Kings, have been built. It's why the likes of Ottawa, Anaheim and Pittsburgh have been or are exceptional teams. It's why the Islanders had a dynasty and why the old Penguins had so many great teams and how all those solid Avalanche teams were formed back in Quebec. |
Uh...does he realize this isn't the NFL and contracts are guaranteed? |

every name is being tossed around from all those mentioned to other guys like Neil Smith , Doug Armstrong , Jim Benning ... Ill toss in a name that might on the radar , Colin Campbell.
Pratt predicts Tamby will be named by end of the month. I disagree with that if they wanted Tamby he would've been named already , he was barely given a strong endorsement as interim GM. you get the feeling the new GM will get the green light to clean house. |

I'll predict Linden. Hell, he should know the CBA pretty well. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

| this seriously so up in the air...my prediction is gonna be Doug Armstrong. Based nothing more than a shot in the dark and a little logic. Its not "hope" on my part to say the least , I dont hate him just saying I remember he's the GM that brought Ribeiro AND Lindros to Dallas!!! |

Great read from Iain McIntyre: http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/sports/story.html?id=ca43603d-4759-4ce9-9214-f01dde9456a8

Everyone wants the Canucks to win.
You just can't have it on demand, as Aquilini wants.
If we can agree that the Canucks' 1982 run to the Stanley Cup final was an aberration, a confluence of favourable circumstance when 16 of 21 teams made the playoffs, the franchise has had only two sustained periods of anything resembling superiority.
The first were Pat Quinn's teams from the early 1990s. The genesis of those teams was the drafting of Trevor Linden and Pavel Bure and two key trades: The acquisition of Kirk McLean and Greg Adams from the New Jersey Devils, and the deal that brought Cliff Ronning, Geoff Courtnall and Sergio Momesso from the St. Louis Blues.
Linden was drafted in 1988 and Bure a year later, and the trades were in 1987 and 1991, respectively. But the Canucks' breakthrough season was 1991-92, and they didn't go to the final until 1994. Does that tell you something about patience?
Then look at the Canuck teams that averaged 97 points a season between 2001 and 2004. The cornerstones of these -- Markus Naslund, Ed Jovanovski, Mattias Ohlund, Todd Bertuzzi, Brendan Morrison -- were acquired between 1996 and 2000. During that time, the Canucks were among the worst teams in the NHL.
But Brian Burke kept the group together, adding to it slowly, until it became an offensive powerhouse.
The Aquilinis have fully owned the Canucks only two seasons, but already they've given up on one regime. You can expect the Canucks to go backwards when a new general manager comes in and begins dismantling Nonis's team.
|
And yet more evidence that these guys lurk on OTP...
| Quote: |
| What happens if the Canucks drop another 10 points next season? Remember, there's zero-tolerance for missing the playoffs. No excuses. Do the Canucks, already looking like a banana republic, start turnstiling managers in and out the way the George Steinbrenner's New York Yankees did in the 1980s? |
