Not a surprise here.

Ollie was the best goalie ever to wear the German jersey.

Too bad it had to go this way.

I still don't think Huet is all that special. But as a Leaf fan I'm likely not getting the whole picture as he may just have matchup issues playing against the Leafs in the past.

No, Huet isn't all that special. But Kölzig is almost as old as I am and he couldn't handle it anymore. That's why the Caps traded for Huet.

And to be forced out by a Frenchman no less.

It's too bad, this team finally got good about 2 years too late for him, in the meantime he had to suffer through the fiasco that was the Jagr era.

McPhee's handling of his two most popular and most loyal veterans in Bondra and Kolzig has been shameful to say the least. Did Huet make the Caps that much better? Not sure, but a first-round exit is a first-round exit, so in essence even though it looks like for the most part that the acquisitions of Fedorov and Huet worked out, they merely bought the Caps three more games and an OT ending. Would Olie have been that much worse? Didn't seem to me that even though he was solid that You-Ay didn't exactly steal any of those games.

Caps goaltending situation will be a bit iffy going into the offseason. Huet can't handle a full season workload, which means GMGM will have to get a viable backup. I'm betting he'll do something stupid and sign Ray Emery.

I kinda wish McPhee would get the boot. I think I've said it before, for every good move he makes he makes about three more that set this franchise back.

You can't buy the publicity the Caps got from their playoff push and 1 series. That revitalized the franchise and will make it so much easier to sell new season tickets for Leonsis. This franchise was just showing signs of life in late February... they became the toast of town in a city that only cares about 1 of its 4 major sports franchises... and actually, DC United of the MLS does virtually as well as teams like the Wizards, Caps, and Nationals do.

The Caps broke through in their marketplace and acquiring Huet at the expense of Kolzig retiring, made this team a hell of a lot of money.

Maybe the silliest comment I've ever heard on this board.Laughing

Olaf Kolzig was far and away the worst starting goaltender in the NHL, and worse than many backups at this juncture in his career. Olaf in nets meant a guaranteed 2 bad goals a night. Brent Johnson was a more reliable netminder for them, but kept Kolzig as backup when Huet arrived for his leadership skills.

Without Huet, the Caps don't make the playoffs. There would be no Ovie playoff madness.

He wasn't forced out. Olaf became a liability two years ago, but they would have gotten rid of him sooner if he were any other player. I think GMGM treated Olaf with a lot of respect, letting stick around, even as a backup, for this long awaited playoff appearance.

Can we stop it here.

We all know he should have retired last year. Maybe the Caps asked him to stay for another season.

I have too much respect for a guy who played on shitty teams for almost all his damn hockey life (Team Germany and the Caps) without complaining. Let him rest in hockey heaven.

Come on, worst starting goaltender is a little harsh. Ask Tortorella if his starting goaltending was better Laughing

I also wouldn't say he's been more of a liability than an asset. I've seen him a few times this season and while he certainly isn't Zilla circa 98, I don't think he's been as bad as you say that he has. At least in what I've seen, but I'm also a big Kolzig fan...I agree that GMGM treated with with respect though. I didn't like what went down with Bondra and how GMGM dealt with that, but I think he handled Kolzig's situation well. Unfortunately, getting someone like Huet became a necessity for the team. They also have to think about life after Kolzig, as they have nothing(Varlamov a few years away?). A 2nd round pick for Huet, who had a fantastic record down the stretch, and maybe the possibility of signing him afterwards. It wasn't a sign of disrespect, just an unfortunate but necessary move for the Caps.

Varlamov is about as ridiculous as a proposal for the future as it gets. The guy is terrible. Their future in goal is Michal Neuvirth if it's to come homegrown.

Is he terrible or is it the crappy goaltender coaching in Russia?

Yeah I don't know anything about Washington's goaltending prospects and that was the only name that came to mind.

How about that Ouellet dude? He should be a good one!

Schneider and Vancouver's second round pick for Semin! Very Happy

Laughing

And I thought Bobby Clarke got completely hoodwinked when he coughed up Maxime along with three draft picks for Adam Oates. Still an overpayment, but obviously Bobby knew something McPhee didn't.

No, hindsight does not make that trade any less stupid than it was.

Well, it will take a LOT of investment for him to become good. I'd say more than 3 years in North American minor leagues. This guy should've been told by his agent to go to major junior at 18 and get the hell outta dodge. He was horrible in consecutive world juniors... he definitely has been left to his own resources, much like most Russian goaltenders. But it says a lot when your backup that no one thinks is that good outplays you each time out. I think he's already ruined.

Neuvirth is a pretty good one, though. Came to the OHL and went to the Memorial Cup with Plymouth last year. He got traded twice this past year (from Plymouth to Windsor to Oshawa) but has had a good playoff for the Generals, who won't make the Final because Tavares hasn't been as dominant.

Neuvirth hasn't played since game 5 of the Niagara series when he got shelled for 6 goals in less than half of the game.
