PREVIEW

I'll avoid puns and silly "Vs." pictures since I'm in someone else's sandbox.

Well I'm not looking for a trip into WCF or even WCSF past, just some good hockey. If anything the death of the rivalry will just mean these teams won't engage in any tough-guy antics and just play.

The thing from the Avs' persepective I'm most worried about is the long layoff. More often than not that's the kiss of death for most NHL playoff teams.

Should be a damn good series if both teams play like they can. There definitely isn't the hatred and rivalry that used to be, but there are some guys on both squads that might see to this series getting physical and the teams angry with each other.

I probably won't see much, if any, of this game though Sad

Quite the contrary. A team that has gone 7 games in Round 1 hasn't won the Cup since Pittsburgh in 1991-92. The less you play earlier, generally the better. Tampa Bay, for example, got through the first two rounds in 9 games in 2004, which helped them win two 7 game series at the end.

Of course, Pittsburgh were the 4th consecutive champion that went 7 games in Round 1, so it may be nothing more than a statistical anomoly that it's been that long.

Definitely not a game I'd show to aspiring goaltenders. Neither was particularly stellar, but give Ozzie credit, he came through went it counted.

Avs didn't play well at all in this opener, and unfortunately this time Theo didn't cover up their glaring mistakes. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't horrible but he regressed to old habits, his almost perfect rebound control from the last series simply wasn't there. Budaj was okay and the team played better in front of him after the switch, but bottom line the Avs just looked outclassed. And yes, they are outclassed, but at times they definitely took it to the Wings, especially Smyth, who had a solid game.

Not having Forsberg didn't help either. Mad

Okay, well, not unexpected, but still disappointed nonetheless.

Oh and shame on Paulie Stastny for diving...I know he was on the PK and all but...c'mon man, you're better than that. Mad

Yup, he had a good one on Jones in the nhl.tv highlights! Where? Jones' own blue line of course! When? On a simple outlet pass from the defense of course!! Twisted Evil Kronwall's been a monster these playoffs!

Av I don't mind the pictures, but ya can't be ripping on the Wings with them Laughing

And if I choose to change em, it's the Wings sandbox so don't go changing them again like you own the place like someone else has done before. Wink

Groin injury suffered at the morning skate. Mad Apparently Wolski got hurt as well, no idea what his status will be for game 2. Mad Mad

Apparently Theo was sick with the flu, that would explain it. Hopefully he's good to go next game.

I shouldn't sell the Avs so terribly short. They actually did turn it on and rally back from a 4-1 deficit to make it 4-3. Nonetheless, they had an extremely bad stretch where they sat back and let the Wings do as they please for a good 10-15 minute stretch of play. Can't make mistakes that bad against Detroit.

Oh well, game 2...hopefully we see Wolski and Forsberg and not Hlinka and McCormick. Mad Mad Mad

Question. If Theo has the flu, why the hell would he be allowed anywhere near the team's dressing room and therefore the rest of the team?

Well, they know he uses a different water bottle than anyone else at least.
