Slumping Sabres have a six-pack of problems

Quote:
1. Underachieving stars. Fair or not, Thomas Vanek is getting paid $10 million this season. He had five points, same as fourth-liner Daniel Paille, and 17 shots on goal entering the weekend. Maxim Afinogenov scored one goal for Buffalo, matching Leafs defenseman Bryan McCabe. Afinogenov, whose stat line read 0-0-0 seven times in the first eight games, is one of the most overrated players in the league.

Agree - Vanek's salary aside he needs to play better. Vanek has vanished again so far. Max isn't shooting. Simple as that.

Quote:
2. Poor goaltending. Ryan Miller deserves leeway while overcoming his cousin's death. That's not easy. Sooner than later, he needs to get his head on straight and his game in order. He entered the weekend with a 3.32 goals-against average and a .886 save percentage, well below anybody's standards.

Where hath the big stop gone? Twice in seven starts, he allowed six goals. It happened once all last season.

Agree - Miller's been less than stellar so far.

Quote:
3. Lack of effort. Give the Sabres a lie-detector test with a question about their work ethic, and they would pass with flying colors. They're convinced they're giving their best. If they come back in two months and review their first 10 games, they'll see they were kidding themselves.

AGREE - They are infuriating to watch at times.

Quote:
4. Little leadership. Buffalo loves a good blowout. Its first three wins were by a combined score of 18-7. Get the Sabres down a goal or two, and they disappear. It's a sign they lack strong leaders who are comfortable under duress. It could define their season either way. Jochen Hecht is a solid two-way player, but is he a guy who commands respect in the dressing room?

Agree, somewhat. There are leaders in that room, Hecht included. They just need to find their voice. These are guys that haven't had to be leaders. I think someone will step up. Maybe Campbell.

Quote:
5. Where's the D? Someone please tell Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman the season has started. The Sabres' top defense pairing, a combined minus-7 going into the weekend, was on the ice for four even-strength goals against Carolina. Dmitri Kalinin was typically mediocre before he was injured. They better get Brian Campbell signed before he gets away. Forwards have been slow getting back, a major problem.

AGREE AGREE AGREE. And the rookie, Sejkara, that they called up to replace Kalinin is brutally bad.

Quote:
6. Toughness a weakness. It's not a good sign when Ruff suggests he's counting on career perimeter player Ales Kotalik to be among his more physical forwards. Toughness isn't about fighting so much as it's fighting for position. And it's played a large role in putting the Sabres in their current position, last in the division.

Agree. They don't win battles. Ever. Razz

It might be a long season.

They need to play Peters more. I think he had one shift last wednesday. Atleast thats all I remember. Soon as I noticed him on the ice he whacked Aucoin or somebody upside the head with his stick lol

But seriously why dress the guy and not play him? I know he isn't going to score much, but if he could just go out and level somebody that'd be nice Twisted Evil

Speaking of underacheivers - Stafford. I thought he would be really good this year. And he should be good for some toughness too, even though he got beat up by Kovalchuk.
