Quote:
The Predators already have approximately $34 million committed toward the 2008-09 salary cap, and that’s with four key players — goalie Dan Ellis, forward Martin Erat, and defensemen Ryan Suter and Shea Weber — still unsigned, not to mention role players such as Darcy Hordichuk, Kevin Klein and Ville Koistinen.

“I will be shocked if the Nashville Predators don’t have the biggest increase in payroll — both percentage-wise and in sheer dollars — of any team in the NHL,’’ said David Freeman, who heads the team’s ownership group.

“There’s always been that chicken-and-egg question about who should go first: Should the team increase its payroll and then hope fans and sponsors follow suit? Or should the fans and sponsors put up the money, and then the team will spend the money? We are very clearly saying we’re taking the lead. We’re spending the money first.’’

One of the reasons the payroll will increase significantly for 2008-09: a number of new deals will kick in.

Forward J.P. Dumont’s salary jumps from $2.25 million per year to $4 million.

Center David Legwand goes from $1.875 million to $4.5 million.

Goalie Chris Mason moves from $1.25 million to $3 million.

Forward Jordin Tootoo from $600,000 to $980,000.

That’s a $6.5 million payroll increase right there, even before the Predators sit down with Ellis, Erat, Suter and Weber.

Ellis, Erat, Suter and Weber. That's a pretty hefty increase.

Guess it's decision time on Ellis v. Mason, and if anyone will take Mason at his salary. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if they try and move Sullivan if they can prove he's still healthy. And Zidlicky is a guy they might try and move as well.

Pekka Rinne's contract goes from two-way to one-way this next year as well, so they'll definitely be wanting to move a goalie.

Here's another reason for the payroll increase...

Hopefully, they'll actually have paying customers in the stands to buy these calendars and recoup some of this cost...
