Ireland tips his hand....maybe

http://www.comcast.net/sports/articles/nfl/2008/04/18/Dolphins.Ireland.Slip/

I've thought they wanted Chris Long all along, their negotiations with Jake Long just being a financial ploy

The Seahawks have cut Sean Alexander according to Adam Schefter Shocked

Also, I guess Parcells wasn't playing ... Dolphins sign Long (type: Jake)

http://www.nfl.com/draft/story;jsessionid=D130CF7A1C77104AD636374774223AEA?id=09000d5d807e7335&template=with-video&confirm=true

I think the Phins made an expensive mistake

The Rams can breathe easy (and thank the Dolphins for removing that option) and go ahead and take a def. lineman, then an off. lineman in the second round

this puts a RB back onto the priority list at the draft for Seattle. Alexander's situation mirrors Markus Naslund for the Canucks... the face of the franchise the previous 7-8 years , now its time to move forward. I said the same thing about Naslund.. its time to move on.

I think Seattle will go with one of those RB's if they're available , if not I can see them going OL ( LG) , they need to rebuild that left side. I can see them getting a TE with one of their top 3 picks too.

The draft kinda snuck on me this week.

The Chiefs traded Jared Allen to the Vikings today for 3 draft picks Surprised
their 1st rounder (17), and both of their 3rd rounders
That's a steep price, to go along with the 73 mil/6 years they signed him for
However, DE was a key concern for the Vikes (Udeze has leukemia, and James is coming off knee surgery)

Apparently, the Vikes felt they needed one impact player more than they needed young players. They better hope they can get a good WR with their 2nd rounder, otherwise they can expect to see 8 or nine in the box every week as teams stack up to stuff AD.

Kansas City on the other hand is sitting pretty draft day;
Quote:
The Chiefs already owned the No. 5 overall pick in the draft, and now have 13 selections with the trade, including six of the first 82 picks.

They should be able to finally address their needs along the O-Line,
provided they use the extra picks wisely. I'm betting they take Matt Ryan at # 5, then use their other 1st rounder on an Off Tackle

In other news, Dallas finally worked out a deal for Pac Man Jones
Tennessee gets a conditional 4th rounder, with a possible 6th rounder next year if Jones reaches certain playing incentives.
Dallas has protected itself in the deal as well with contingencies

With pick 1 already out of the way and only 10 minutes per team, the first round should go a lot faster than last year ... although oil evaporates faster than the first round went last year Laughing

I think the Falcons fucked KC's plans up...Matt Ryan at #3!?!?!? Shocked KC goes ahead and gets Glenn Dorsey...um, okay.

Darren McFadden went earlier than some of the "experts" predicted. A lot of people thought the Broncos should've taken him at #12. Al Davis takes him instead. Consensus is he did so against Lane Kiffin's wishes.

Defensive linemen are going in this first round like I've never seen before.

Broncos pick OT Ryan Clady from Boise State. 6'3" 309 lbs. I hope he's athletic enough to play line here in the Mile High city, Denver usually employs undersized O-linemen because the really big guys (I'm looking at you George Foster, ya fat fuck) get tired too easily at altitude.

I think the Broncos were surprised that Clady was there when they picked.
By all accounts, if the Falcons took Ryan, Clady was going to the Chiefs.
So they couldn't pass on him.
The Chiefs just couldn't pass on Dorsey, who was the best player on many experts boards...they still were able to get an off lineman later in the first round, so it was a very productive first round for them.

Av, whoever thought the Broncos were getting McFadden at 12 smokes too much crack...seriously
A lot of people figured them for a RB, but not McFadden. If Clady hadn't fallen into their lap, they likely may have taken one (Mendenhall and Stewart were linked to them) But there were very productive RBs taken in later rounds
(the Lions getting K.Smith -who was 60 yards shy of breaking Barry Sanders' single season rushing record - in the 3rd round)

If the Raiders coaches had their way and took Dorsey, the Jets would have 100% for certain taken McFadden - if he got by the Chiefs.
But we all knew Al Davis was gonna get his man Laughing

I feel sorry for Matt Ryan sort of...going to Atlanta.
KC was a much better fit for him ... Atlanta's receivers suck
They had a chance to help him out with their next pick as only one WR had been taken, but they chose to trade back into the 1st rd and take a project off lineman, when they could have stayed put in the 2nd and gotten WR Devin Thomas (who most experts had going to the Bills at 11)
He was still on the board because the Pats (after trading down to 10) chose to reach for LB J.Mayo, and left Leodis McKelvin on the board.
The Bills had to have him, and gambled that they could still get a WR in the 2nd round...they were correct
They scored super-sized red-zone threat James Hardy (who also was supposed to be gone in the first)
So only one WR gets picked in the first round, that seems unusual

I'm on the fence about the Pats picks
For the first time in the Belichick era, they take a LB on day one (1st round
then take another in the 3rd and 7th)
Both of their first 2 picks (Mayo and CB T.Wheatley) have had a history with injuries ... the press is saying Mayo is going to play ILB, but his data says he's better served on the outside (may be small to play inside in a 3-4)
I was REALLY hoping they were gonna take McKelvin, but they passed and the Bills snatched him up

Karma would have McKelvin returning kicks for TDs in both games vs. Pats this year Laughing

Not entirely surprising that the Pats went LB heavy...losing Colvin and possibly Seau (and even if they don't he's frickin' OLD) you gotta have supremely athletic linebackers to do the 3-4.

Surprising where the highest-touted QB's went. Brohm ends up being Aaron Rodgers' backup/insurance policy (unless Favre changes his mind) in Green Bay and Henne winds up a Dolphin. Still kind of stunned Flacco went before both of them. He's a monster though, easily the biggest QB drafted.

My old man told me Colt Brennan came to the NFL combine way out of shape and as a result whatever draft stock he had plummeted. Taken in the 6th round by Washington...serves you right, dumbass.

Vikes fans are probably lining up now for their "Booty" jerseys. Laughing Something tells me that he'll be a better NFL QB than Matt Leinart. That's more an indictment of Leinart though.

Broncos do some beefing up at receiver (even though we're kinda deep there, but hey you never know with Marshall) and we also get a return guy...good thing since we couldn't have been worse at pretty much every phase of special teams. The most important pick though will likely be Lichtensteiger or whatever the hell his name is...he's a center and already the heir apparent to Tommy Nalen. Losing him will be a serious blow to an O-line in serious need of rebuilding.

Q & A session w/Clady today, I only caught a little of it...definitely not a media darling. A man of few words to be sure. I guess I can see why he scored so low on that silly Wonder-Lick test. Laughing But I don't care, if his lateral movement and quickness are as good as everyone says he'll do wonders for a line that simply didn't get the job done last year.

Oh and I was wrong. Clady is 6-foot-SIX and 319 lbs. Big kid, hope someone that tall knows how to cut block... Twisted Evil

Oh I knew the Pats had no choice but to address the LB issue they've ignored over the last , oh 7 or 8 drafts.....

I just wasn't expecting them to cock-block themselves, then reach for a player with an injury history

Oh, Belichick & Co. would have everyone believe that Mayo was always their man.............. Laughing

To back up, they traded down after the Jets took Vernon Gholston (as every one knew they would) I've been telling people the Pats would NEVER use pick #7 for months (unless the improbable happened, like either McFadden or Gholston getting past the Jets)

But I feel, (and so does more than a few of my co-workers) that the Pats were trying to get Keith Rivers. When they traded down with the Saints, they cock-blocked the Bengals (who wanted Sedrick Ellis, who the Saints took)
So naturally, the Bengals took Keith Rivers...and cockblocked the Pats
A lot of cockblocking going on in this draft....
Maybe Mayo was the top LB on Belichick's list................yeah right
considering he doesn't draft LBs, hard to imagine he had some special insight into it...although McFadden gives Mayo high marks
Why trade down to 10 to get a player that wasn't likely on anyone's first round draft list? Or maybe he was, and I'm just an idiot (very likely)
NOTE: Super Bowl Tally: Bill Belichick 4, Hipcheck 0

I guess I'm just pissed that the Bills got the player I wanted Laughing

(awaiting a nyah nyah from Patty)

Baltimore traded picks for a defensive back, too, sending its fourth-round slot to Oakland for Fabian Washington.

wow, missed that in the hub bub..........
was Washington that much of a disappointment?
The Raiders pass defense has been tops in the league the last 2-3 years
I just figured Washington was a part of that ...
although, Av, your Broncos facing him twice per year could shed light on that

I like the Eagles moves...trading down to get an extra pick this year and Carolina's first next year, plus in Desean Jackson they got the most explosive WR available in the draft this year. I think Devon Thomas was overated anyway-one good year. At the very least Jackson should help in the dreadful special teams. Laws was a good pick as well since the Freak was cut loose. They also got a solid OT and FS in the later rounds for some much needed depth for the aging vets at those positions.

They also traded for Lorenzo Booker a RB from the Fins. Not sure why but could be because Buckhalter is injury prone and Hunt lost the ball to many times last year.

Oh yeah and kudos for suing TO for his bonus money.

Yeah they have two first rounders to trade next season Wink

Was just watching a cable sports show, and there were "analysts" from 4 cities commenting on various topics ( Scott Zolak from Boston, Brian Mitchell from Washington, some dude from NY and a blonde woman from Philly)

One of the discussions was the Eagles draft strategy in recent years
She was jokingly critical of their trend of trading away their 1st rounder every year and drafting from small schools to avoid paying big contracts

She also suggested Lito Sheppard might get "Simoned" this year
ie, cut right before the 1st week out of spite.
I don't see them cutting him, if so why not take one of the trade offers?
I'm just wondering what the asking price has been, I'm hearing the Eagles demands are showing a lack of interest in actually trading him
Sports Illustrated's Dr. Z in his infinite wisdom actually projected the Eagles to take a CB (Aquib Talib) with pick 19 Laughing Laughing Laughing
He only got 4 right in the first round anyways ... new career dude?

Marcus Trufant hangs out in Port Coquitlam for a day.

Mike Beamish wrote:
It seemed even stranger to see the Pro Bowl cornerback and his wife pulling up in front of the Port Coquitlam school in a stretch limo, emerging only after seven-year-old Lucas Smith and his posse tumbled out the door.

Lucas, a Grade 2 student, was the most popular kid at Blakeburn Tuesday.

Winner of an online contest sponsored by NFL Canada -- "Take an NFL Player to School" -- he got his wish, and his schoolmates got to cut class, when the Seahawk came to speak at a special assembly in the gym.

Mike Beamish wrote:
Still, to hear Trufant tell it, he was more fretful at the prospect of facing 370 kids -- from kindergarten to Grade 5 -- plus their teachers and the football team from nearby Terry Fox secondary.

Mike Beamish wrote:
Trufant grew up in Tacoma, played his college football at Washington State and was drafted by the Seahawks in the first round in 2003 -- 11th overall -- so he's well aware that there's a place called B.C., and that pro football is also played here.

"Ryan Phillips [B.C. Lions halfback] played with my brother [Isaiah] at Eastern Washington," Trufant said.

"Ryan's a great all-around guy. He's from the area, too [Seattle]. I'm local, man."

Lito is unhappy with the contract he has and is threatening to hold out. I get sick of this crap every year. Seems like we always end up with that one douche who threatens or holds out every year. Those types never win championships look at TO and Oucho-cinqo.

Yeah, it sucks....but what are the Eagles asking?

I read the Jaguars are preparing a package of '09 picks to offer for him
I guess playing the Colts twice a year, you better have lots of good corners

obviously, they haven't seen Ovechkin's contract with the Caps, if they think he wasn't getting paid money
