What do you need the receiver to do? Oh, and it's no longer available it seems.
It's been my experience that you can find a receiver for whatever you need it to do. If you are getting a PS3, and already have a comp that has a DVI / HDMI out, you probably won't need anything that will upconvert to HDMI - one that will do HDMI pass-through should be sufficient. AVSforums.com is a pretty good resource. Is it just you comp and a PS3 that you need it to handle or do you anticipate hooking up some other device(s) to this? _________________ ... I don't even need the HDMI pass-through though. It's just an extra HDMI cord. I can just plug the HDMI into the TV, and then plug the optical audio into the receiver. Why even plug the HDMI into the receiver? I'll have to switch the input at the tv or at the receiver, so it doesn't really make a difference. Currently I have an optical switch that I have my CD player, computer, and eventually the PS3 plugged into, but it was just a cheap manual switch so if I want to switch which device is feeding audio into the receiver, I have to do it manually.
If there were outlets on the receivers, then I'd plug my CD player and Subwoofer into them and just leave their power buttons on all the time. Turn on the receiver, they turn on. Turn it off, they turn off...
Damn, when I describe what I want my receiver to do, basically it just allows me to control shit with the remote instead of doing it manually
I really don't need the receiver, but it'd just be nice to have Maybe eventually I'll have a cable box and a dvd recorder or something, so I'll wait for a while before I get another one.
I bought my buddy's old Harmony 550 remote for 40 bucks, and picked a new one up on sale for my older bro for doing my taxes/housewarming. The Harmony remotes seem like fun _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Yeah, those Harmony things are great. Dead easy to set up and the ability to add a favorite button or two is really nice. I have the 880 and I love it. I have about a dozen other remotes, one for each component, that I no longer need to use...
The biggest thing I needed the receiver for was to upconvert analog component and composite signals (from the Xbox, PS2, Wii and old school VCR) to HDMI. It could handle all my audio as well, but I don't use that functionality. Plus, it looks way cool. _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

Hmmm, I thought you had a switch that you plugged all of your systems into? Is it like that and then the switch plugs into your receiver, and then the receiver into your projector? I'm sure you aren't plugging each component into the projector
When the hell are you doing with your audio if you aren't plugging it into the receiver?
I was looking at RF receivers for the comp. That could be fun, but not really necessary because I have a wireless kb/mouse.
They make some damn cool media/home theatre PC cases. They'd look really nice in a cabinet or wall unit or whatever. One more neato home theatre thing that'd be cool to get but I shouldn't spend the money on
I need a second income for my electronics fix _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

I've seen those poking around the past couple of days. The touch screen strikes me as being completely pointless _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Okay, try and keep up...
Xbox 360 with HD DVD, and Wii all have component video out.
Old school Toshiba VCR still uses composite video out, as do a karaoke mike that I have (it's like guns in America; as a Filipino, it's my constitutional right to have one in my home).
PS2 also currently uses composite, although I might use the old Monster S-video cable that I still have lying around.
Dish HD DVR has HDMI out (audio and video), while the Sony DVD player has HDMI out (video only). The DVD player is a 5 disc home theatre in a box - I didn't do my homework so thoroughly on this one unfortunately. It does a great job but there are no audio outputs... Only input and all the speakers MUST hook up to this.
Again, because of a lack of foresight on my part, I only buried HDMI in the walls and ceiling to my projector, not realizing that the Sony receiver does not have component or composite in, so I couldn't plug my other crap to it and have it upconvert to HDMI. I blame sticker shock; have you priced out what 25' of HDMI costs these days?
So the solution was to get an upconverting AV receiver. That's where the old JVC came in; I had it handle all the video, while the Sony DVD player handled all audio, including AM/FM tuner.
So when that receiver started to act twitchy (that's the technical term for it), I though the problem was that it had too many inputs into various jacks that it couldn't always be counted on to upconvert the right signals from the right jacks. SO I bot an inexpensive switcher (<$50) to take all those S-video, composite and component signals and put them out to the same pipe so that the JVC would only need to be told whether it was HDMI-1, -2, composite, component or s-video. The bonus is that the switcher also now allows me to use the network bridge for the Dish DVR when the Xbox isn't using it.
Well that kinda worked ok, until the JVC's analog-to-digital transcoding fried itself and it refused to upconvert any signal to HDMI. It can still pass through HDMI it seems but it was a paperweight otherwise.
So I upgraded my receiver to the Onkyo 605, which I <3. But now, you can imagine that I have remotes for every goddamned one of those things...
I'm waiting for the Sony DVD receiver to fry itself so I can eventually use the Onkyo receiver for the audio as well. The Onkyo has Sirius and XM satellite radio support as well... _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.

Wow
Throw up some pictures of that mess!
I forgot I had planned on putting up a pick after I bought the TV:
See those two big empty holes on the top? I've gotta fill one with a PS3 _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Looks like I will welcome a 60 inch Sony into the new Man's room (courtesty of the previous owner). I am very excited to post pics of the new and improved man's room here shortly. _________________ -UP THE IRONS! |

So I finally got tired of using my 8-year-old Craftsman push mower and upgraded. Bot a John Deere J25, 6.75HP, self-propelled mower with a 21" deck from Lowes last night as an early Father's day gift.
Guess I won't be getting that PS3 as a Blu-Ray player anytime soon... _________________ ... Because the old one, is well, old.
