Given the ability of the team to really turn it on just a hair too late two seasons in a row makes me think the coach is also part of the problem. _________________ psssssssssssssshhh....bing bong ping bong bing bong...pssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. |

The new GM needs to bring in his own guy anyways. May as well give Maurice a chance to get first dibs at another job.
An oddly classy move on the Leafs part. _________________ John McCain is fit as a fiddle… Is 71 the new 30?” - Fox News' Rich Lowry

Maurice seems like a good coach, and I'm sure if given a good squad could have done alot more.
But I have to agree with Hounsy, the team has had motivation issues for his entire reign, and the coach does bear atleast some responsibility for that. _________________ (Working in a Call Centre) + (Being a Leafs Fan) = (One HUGE glutton for punishment)

Cool man! I didn't particularly like Maurice all that much as a coach as the Leafs played a dry, relatively boring brand of hockey. I can't honestly say there were many contests that had me jumping off the seat that he coached.
New squad of troops, they oughta bring Pat Quinn back into the mix. He's really the best avail. coach out there anyway! _________________

OK, I thought you were just kidding around, but who knew there was some truth!
The hockey gods do hate Vancouver's guts, that much we know. How better to show it than having Nonis lead the Leafs to a Cup... man... _________________

Well it's not like Nonis could overspend on defense in T.O., it's already been done!
Nonis would be perfect though, just hire him, have him struggle to make a team barely able to fit under the cap competitive, and then fire him once he frees up salary!
Quenneville, in all seriousness though, would be a great choice. He's just the right guy to make a team of underachievers work somehow (unless you want the team to tank for Tavares). And he's no stranger to goalie controversies.
Speaking of Q, are free agent coaches under the same July 1st rule as players? |

It cannot be emphasized enough... the Leafs have NOT underachieved the past 3 years. They are what they are: a non-playoff team. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. Don't worry, US679, the Leafs will win only because of a series of bounces and good luck, not because they're any good. At least that's Jyrki's latest theory on winning. _________________ "Oh my God. In all seriousness, I get J21's point, but I think after the 1st round and possibly the 2nd round that goes out the window and yes I understand in a cap system teams are closer matched than a non cap, but look at the NBA in a capped system there are some good teams and lousy teams. There does not seem to be the parody of the NHL _________________

NBA cap not near as tight top to bottom as NHL due to the Luxury tax system they have.

I checked with my employer and all the Leafs have to do is ask and they will be given permission to talk with me.

Note the italics -- those bastards will stop at nothing to stick it to us (and Razz, of course).

It's not my "latest theory," nor is it mine -- it's simple math.
4-7 games = small sample size
Small sample size = greater impact of randomness
This has always been true, but is even truer with a cap (parity means more traditional factors are saw-offs) and with expansion (proportionately fewer teams make the playoffs, so they all tend to be pretty good).
My other point -- that not every good team who doesn't win the Cup can be said to have choked or even underachieved -- is also just a point of logic.
US679 -- one other reason why the NBA has less parity (in addition to the one mentioned by Hounsy) is that on each team, fewer players play more minutes than on a hockey team. So the impact of any single player is proportionately greater, in many cases twice as great. _________________
