If you wanted to actually watch competitive hockey for a change (you know, a game where the outcome is in doubt, which seems to have disappeared completely in these NHL playoffs), today's Junior A National Championship was one to watch. There were some good chances, but a lot of nervous moments led to uncharacteristic misses.

The Broncos carried a 1-0 lead late into the 3rd, when they took a penalty as the Camrose Kodiaks pressed hard, setting up a 6 on 4 situation for the final minute of regulation. In the final seconds, the Broncos failed to clear, the puck was sent towards the net, it went off a stick and right to Camrose's leading scorer (and Canadian Junior A player of the year) Joe Colborne right in the slot, with no one in front of him. He gave a quick wrister, and with 1 second remaining, Humboldt goaltender Taylor Nelson made a spectacular glove save to preserve the win and bring the championship back to Humboldt, who last won in 2003. No SJHL team has won since then, either.

Check the highlights on TSN here to see the save. I've never seen a goaltender celebrate so much after making a save. Laughing

For those unfamiliar, and I know that's probably the majority around here, this is what it takes to win the RBC Cup:

You win your own league's championship. There are 10 Junior A leagues in Canada... each of the 4 Western Provinces has their own league, Ontario has 3 different leagues, Quebec has 2 and the Maritimes have one.

After you win your own league's championship, you enter a second playoff to determine your regional champion. Alberta and BC play each other for the Doyle Cup, Saskatchewan and Manitoba play for the Anavet Cup, the 3 Ontario champions (plus a host) play for the Dudley Hewitt Cup, and the Quebec champions and the Maritime champion (plus a host) play for the Fred Page Cup.

The 4 winners advance to the RBC Cup, where it is determined in the same format as the Memorial Cup is (each team plays each other once in round robin, then the #1 seed goes to the Final, and 2 v 3 play a semi before playing #1 in the final).

Here's Wikipedia's Junior A breakdown:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Junior_A_Hockey_League

Anyways, this has been quite the run for the Broncos, especially given the fact that they once were down 3 games to 1 following a triple OT loss in the SJHL Final to Kindersley:
http://www.canada.com/reginaleaderpost/news/sports/story.html?id=d50c7756-bd73-4ae7-9efb-7578d0087d19

I like the Broncos. But I also like the Yorkton Terriers and Melfort Mustangs. I've got 3 teams in the SJHL I cheer for. Laughing

But I played a game at the Broncos' home rink as a kid. That sets them a little apart from the other two teams.

The Broncos went 48-9-0-1 in the regular season, and swept the Anavet Cup vs Portage as well. That SJHL Final and losing to Camrose in the round robin were really their only stumbling blocks (they did take 6 games to beat Nipawin in the first round, but swept Flin Flon in the 2nd round).

I was also unaware to the fact that the SJHL abandoned the simple "North Division" and "South Division" titles, and sold their naming rights to hockey equipment makers Itech and Sherwood. Confused

Back when Darren Haydar was a Milton Merchant before he went off to New Hampshire, he led the team to the RBC Cup tourney(I think they got killed) and won Ontario Junior A Player of the Year. The Merchants(Ice Hawks now) used to and still play in Memorial Arena(used to be Thompson Arena, and thats what my whole family still calls it). That's where I played pretty much all of my rep hockey and I remember when we'd practice or play on Fridays, and the Merchants would be coming on after us. They always played Friday home games. That was fun. Back when the Merchants were a top team, that place used to be rammed. Especially that year. You couldn't find a place to sit or stand and it was so friggin loud.

A family on our street used to billet some of the players too, and every once in a while they'd come out and play street hockey with my brothers and I and all the kids in the neighbourhood. Including the team enforcer, who was a fun dude. It was a little weird when we grew up and the guys on the team were now people we went to high school with.

Thanks for the breakdown, I actually had no idea about any of this.

And it's nice to see the format weighted against Ontario and Quebec. Laughing

If you go on a league by league breakdown of competitiveness, it really is weighted more in favour of the SJHL than anyone else. Laughing

Generally speaking, the best league of all of them is the BCHL, with the AJHL 2nd and the SJHL about 3rd or so, probably with the Southern Ontario one tied or slighty ahead. The SJHL is clearly better than the MJHL, and so the SJHL is probably the league most often represented in the RBC Cup as a result of all this.

Anyways, Saskatchewan now ties Ontario and BC for most national titles by province, which means the SJHL ties the BCHL for most titles by league. The SJHL's totals are inflated thanks to a dynasty by the Prince Albert Raiders in the late 70's and early 80's. After winning their 5th national championship in 1982 (2nd consecutive, 4th in 6 years), the Raiders folded as a SJHL franchise and became a WHL expansion team.

A Quebec team has never won this national title.

I had no idea that the BC(J)HL was so strong (did it drop the 'J' to fit into the rigid 4-letter format?) Even with the division of the ON and QC leagues, I would have thought one of them would probably be best, and I would even have imagined that Alberta would field stronger teams than BC (which I would expect to produce fewer players).

I've only ever attended one BCJHL (as it then was) game, ironically in Bellingham, WA.

I guess the 'J' is still there, just not something that pops up on internet stat breakdowns (since it's 5 letters) so I always call it the BCHL as a result.

I think the BCJHL has just done a great job recruiting players with hopes of getting scouted by NCAA teams moreso than most Junior A leagues, which has helped a lot. There is less of that attitude in the AJHL and SJHL, most players in those leagues are trying to get to the WHL. I don't know how it works for Ontario, but I presume it's somewhat similar. The BCJHL has established itself as pretty much a NCAA feeder, and benefits from that added exposure.

I wonder if it has something to do with the size of the OPJHL. They have an absolute shitload of teams and while they do play less regular season games, they play a lot of playoff games. The sheer number of teams might also dilute the talent pool somewhat compared to the other leagues, but that'd also depend on the number of players that the teams are drawing from.

No, they really did drop it some years ago (late '90s or early '00s). It started out as the BCHL, and is now again the BCHL, but spent some years as the BCJHL in between. I guess it was just a bit of a mouthful.

Yeah, that'd do it.

35 OPJHL teams and a 36th coming next year... The SJHL has 12 teams, but travel is a lot worse. Laughing

Still a 3:1 ration in Southern Ontario vs. Saskatchewan still means that Sask's league should be more diluted. Laughing

In my grand tradition of declaring a sports allegiance in every league no matter how little I follow it, I hereby declare the

Cowichan Valley Capitals

to be my Tier 2 Junior 'A' team of choice.

Reasoning: in addition to bearing a version of the old Washington Capitals' logo (as well as an almost-Seahawks logo), I am greatly amused by the fact that a non-capital city (or collection of cities, really) has taken on this name. They're not far from Victoria, but Victoria has its own team.

When I played rep, the Milton rep teams never had a nickname. I think it was only after I stopped playing rep when we finally got one and became the Winterhawks, with a Seahawks-like Hawk with Green being the primary color and Blue the secondary.
