This is very true. Unfortunately, with the new rules regarding European draft picks, Detroit (and other teams trying to emulate this strategy) will have to convince their European draft picks to come and play in the AHL for less money than in Europe as an investment in their future. Or, we'll see a lot more Brunnstrom's, Niemi's and Leino's.

Like you say, it'd definitely true. Detroit prefers to be able to leave their players playing a lot of minutes in the A and developing so that when Detroit brings them up, management is bringing them up because they're ready, not to see if they're ready. Another important aspect of that is that their pro scouting and ability to get and use overlooked or undervalued players and turn them into Red Wings while their prospects develop.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more Tier II Jr. A and USHL guys taken as well(Detroit had 2 OPJHL picks last season) . I would expect that Detroit would put out their feelers on some of their possible targeted Euro picks on their feelings of coming to play Major Junior instead of staying in Europe.

The problem with doing that with European players is that leagues like the leagues in Sweden, Finland, Russia, and the Czech Republic are generally better at developing European players than major junior is. Some countries, like Germany and Switzerland, are better off sending their players over to major junior, because their national leagues are full of North American professionals and do not really promote a strong national program/development system as a result. Russia's actually a bit iffy, but that's more the politics of the Federation than anything else. I'm not sure how Slovakia operates, and smaller European countries like Denmark, Austria, and Belarus is probably a case by case basis.

I really do think they should raise the negotiation rights term from 2 years to 4 years for European draft picks. And make it so that no one over the age of 20 can be drafted.... 21 year olds are UFA's.

Good point. And I agree about raising the negotiation term. I think that'll be addressed and changed in the next CBA, if not sooner.

Detroit is already seeing that crunch with some of their post-lockout Euro picks.

This is something I have stressed for a long time. People (including my fellow Canuck fans) bemoaning their team's inability to "draft these guys the Wings keep drafting" are somewhat missing the point; it's a much longer process than merely locating seeds then letting them germinate. I wrote about this in the Ivory Tower, some may recall. Had another team -- and the example I usually use is Vancouver -- drafted guys like Datsyuk and Zetterberg, there's absolutely no reason to assume that they would be the players they are now. Many circumstances go into building an NHL player.

And for Detroit it was a calculated risk, too. If the Wings knew, 100%, that these guys would be what they are now, they'd have drafted them earlier, obviously. It's their ability to place them in situations to succeed (partly a self-perpetuating cycle, of course, once you're already a successful team) which has allowed them to reach full potential.

And really, people should stop including Holmstrom on the list of late round steals for Detroit. Dude is the most one-dimensional player in the league. If he didn't go to the front of the net and learn deflections, he wouldn't even be in the NHL. Laughing

Laughing When he first broke in, Bowman told him to go to the front of the net and stand there and don't move. He's actually much better at cycling the puck down low now, and he loves to punish people in the corners.

I didn't see the 2 on 1 faceplant the other night, but I heard it was a beauty Laughing

This had to be a stunt double though
